Biography
Mossback
Guardian of the Fen
Guardian of the Fen
|
Mossback sensed the convening of four legged and winged creatures, as often was the case on the far reaches of the fen. Autumn’s descent left the feel of death and decay; roots reaching deep into the loam beneath the waters; storing the last of the nutrients, stretching for the barest hint of what sunlight was left before came the dark days of winter. The weary days were here. The sorrow days, when the trees overhead would wither. The moss would drink up the cold rains, pooling around claw and hoof which trod upon it. He had heard Quickgleam's voice from afar, the sweet nectar of her words as she spoke to the animals. Animal voices came in chirps and yips to the ears of Mossback, however, they were no kin of his. None save the black creatures graced his ears. It was how it always had been. The chanterelle were his friends, as were lichen, the ravens and crows, and the winged stag which made its way through the forests and hills to places further than Mossback cared to venture. He strayed always near the fen, finding no rhyme nor reason to depart Quickgleam in these years. “Heat holds in the stone of Lórëfelco,” came the muttered voice from the shadow beneath the trees before Mossback stepped out, trailing sweet, rot-smelling fog in his wake, which seeped near Quickgleam. Lórëfelco, the dream cave, which held the warmth of a bubbling spring beneath. Held the warmth of summer sunlight trapped in grey shadow rock, where Quickgleam could weave her beds of fen moss and grasses and rest through the winter under Mossback’s watchful gaze. He looked forward to winters, when the fae creature did not wander out and away from him. “Why do you trouble with animals and beasts so late in the year? The foxes eat the birds, and men tear each other to pieces. It concerns us not.” The fog was beginning to sing around them, gathering in behind her, leaving only a clear expanse of a trail on the gleam of dark water between where Mossback stood, and where Quickgleam fluttered and laughed. Ravens circled overhead, cawing, calling, too seeking the death which would come with winter, and they would feast upon it; upon the carcasses of the silly creatures who could not last. |
