History
Aella was born to Strife and Mara at a time where the clan's diversity was great and there were more Guardians around than would ever be possible today. She had two sisters, a Mirror who took after Strife, and a Guardian who's name Aella would never remember. Favoritism was strong in her family, with her dad Strife focusing only on her Mirror sister, and with Mara always focusing on Aella. It was no surprise to Aella when her Guardian sister died early. Aella was commanded by her parents to never speak of her sister, and obediently she did just that despite her confusion and sadness. This wasn't the only odd request that Mara made of her. Mara would always remind Aella that the two of them were very different from the rest of the clan; that they shared a mother-daughter bond that was stronger than any other and they would always look out for each other. As Aella grew, Mara did all the things mothers typically do: nurtured her, played with her, taught her...and to Aella, her relationship with her mother was strong and nearly perfect. Nearly.

Upon becoming a full fledged adult, Aella began to notice things she couldn't before. Like how her mother would get this glimmer in her eye whenever she'd ask Aella for anything. Or how guilt trips and looks of disappointment were how Mara would teach Aella to be obedient, instead of how Strife commanded obedience through aggression. Aella never knew which was worse, but with her mother, it was always the way Mara would look at her when she said or did something Mara didn't agree with. The very look would immediately make Aella feel nothing but guilt and hurt because she either let Mara down or upset her in some way. Her mother's actions heavily influenced the way Aella saw relationships and herself. She grew up learning that obedience is better than defiance, and strived to never say no to anyone. Mara was pleased with this, for a time.

When Mara eventually took over the clan and decided that the Highland Scrub was no place for her, she dragged the entire family and other Snappers to Greatwyrm's Breach in Dragonhome. This was a far more suitable place, and here Aella met the love of her life.

It was a hard journey for everyone. Along the way, Aella's clan ran into slavers. But the sizes and strength of the Snappers in the clan ensured the slavers wouldn't attempt any attacks or captures. Instead, they offered Mara a chance to buy some of their slaves. Amidst the starving, huddled crowd was a male Guardian by the name of Grimrock, or as the slavers called him, "Grock" as a mockery to his actual name. Mara was far from interested in purchasing a slave, but as fate saw fit, her clan was stuck traveling with the slavers through one of the harshest parts of Dragonhome. It was the only practical thing to do when danger was all around, but this gave Aella and Grimrock a chance to bond, and their bond would distort the one Aella had formed with her mother.

Having never spoken to another Guardian before, Aella learned a lot from Grimrock. They traveled together for seven days, and in that time she got to learn all about Guardian culture, a thing she knew nothing about. On the seventh day, Grimrock spoke of charges, something Aella had only heard once in passing. When he told her what they were in a typical sense, and even told her what his charge was, Aella questioned what her own charge was. That night, she went to her mother, the only person she truly trusted, and asked her, "Mother...what is my charge?" Mara turned to Aella, a hint of something in her eyes that Aella didn't understand, and she replied, "I am." The very next morning, Aella told Grimrock that her mother was her charge, and all he could say was, "I've never met a Guardian with a living creature as their charge. But I guess it really is different for everyone." Come the time for the slavers to depart from Mara's clan, Aella begged Mara to take Grimrock from them so he could be free, and so they could be together. Her mother could only give her another questionable look, and with that typical glimmer in her eyes, Mara hugged Aella and turned to the slavers with treasure in hand.

Present Day
Always under the harsh yet loving hold of Mara, Aella was eventually taught the ways of the healer. This made Aella very happy, as now she could not only protect her charge, Mara, but also heal her if she failed in her task of protecting her. Aella feels as though her mother definitely needs protecting, as she has become so large from all the gifts of the best food that she is believed to be immobile. This doesn't upset Aella too much as Mara always lets her know that she's needed, to feed her, keep her company, and heal her lest she get ill. The feeling of being needed makes Aella feel good, though sometimes she questions if she's really driven by that or by guilt. Regardless, with her new found healing abilities, she's able to help Grimrock as well. Her relationship with him remains strong, but Grimrock is still a slave. Aella is constantly reminded that he was bought, not "adopted." And his slavehood keeps him constantly busy, out hunting, gathering, training, whatever Mara can find for him to do.

Despite the pain this brings to Aella, she does her best to meet with Grimrock whenever she can. She knows that Mara keeps him busy because she fears Aella leaving her for good. This doesn't upset Aella, but instead saddens her. Bound to her mother by oath, by instinct or charge, whatever it may be, Aella continues in obedience, and what she believes to be love.
