Okkervil is the eldest son of the Executioner and the Deathcaller, and one of a handful of their children who have remained within one of their parents' clans. Okkervil was born in Clan Abyss, but followed his mother back to Clan Umbra. Unlike his siblings -- either brutal fighters or powerful mages -- he is the family's black sheep, pursuing the study of alchemy instead. Most, if not all, of his siblings find him rather strange - especially his brother Golgotha, who finds him downright suspicious.

His siblings' feelings and uncertainty about him never seem to be much cause for upset, however. He loves his siblings deeply, but is acutely aware he does not quite fit in among them, and therefore doesn't have much common ground with any of them.

After studying under the Umbral Alchemist, Akantha, for many years, she pursued work underneath the Shadowbinder, allowing Okkervil to take her place as Chief Alchemist.
