he/she/they/it  it came from the heart. the story is told that one day, long before the clan was formed, he slithered out from the rotting heart and coiled his way around the bank. it was here before we were born. it will be here long after we're gone. if nexh'me's story is different, he has never said. her smile was loose, her eyes were blank. she did not twitch or fidget. he stayed. and she watched. "they seem comfortable," a noble pearlcatcher said, regarding it out of the corner of her eye. "until they cause a fuss, they may stay." but they never acted out, and they never burdened anyone. |
"does he eat?" asked a fidgety spiral, unnerved by his calm. "i've never seen him drink." he spared a glance his way, his eyes wide.
"perhaps she gets sustenance another way." a haughty wildclaw joined the discussion, though his voice was low. "i've heard of some familiars eating sun, or absorbing life through their skin." he looked like he had more to say, but fell silent. the group quieted as an old, reverent spiral joined the conversation.
"it needs not. and it wants not. i have seen into its mind. it does not fear. it does not hope." she paused, her mouth pursing slightly. "it does dream," she said after a moment. "and it loves. but little else."
