Biography
Hephaestus
Hoard Manager
Hoard Manager
Hephaestus, son of Palaemon, was one of the first imperials born to the clan. His sisters found swift homes, but no one wanted to pay his groom price. Reina found that deeply irritating because he was a handsome child, and had such wise eyes. 'Stay here, where you're valued,' she said, and he consented.
He has since grown into the lair's mathematician, and has built several abacuses (only one of which remains useful, since the first were of materials too flimsy for him to handle with his large hands and powerful claws). He uses these tools to help Reina sort out things to sell at the dragon markets. As a youth he was oblivious to the fact that Reina was training him in logistics, but those lessons took well. Fully grown, he is now the keeper of the hoard, and beneath his management the clan's wealth has grown exponentially. Once, the Lair by the Sea struggled for coin and had little food and fewer treasures. Now they've dug out extra caverns to house the plenty that mounds in the lair's depths: gleaming coins, potsherds and statues, jewels and fine silks and bits of magical this and that, stacks and rows of plants and seeds, little delicacies to be transformed into feastday foods.
Like his father before him, Hephaestus is gentle and pragmatic, and has weathered the clan's many hardships well. Nevertheless, Reina worries about him. He is lonely, she thinks, and wonders how to solve that problem. Perhaps Cheimon will know.
***
It was a great relief to Hephaestus when Ptah and Vronti managed to cobble together a set of working glasses from the many broken pairs the clan kept digging up in their excursions. He's always been a touch far-sighted, and the problem's only become more acute with age. The headaches that afflict something with the size of an Imperial's skull are epic, and hunching over the clan's account books had become a trial for him.
But now, at last, he can see the numbers!
Spectacles have since begun appearing at the Dragon Markets, and Reina offered to buy him a less obtrusive set... but he prefers the chunky ones Vronti and Ptah made for him. 'They're bigger,' he says. 'It's easier to see through them, than through those tiny ones.'
