____ he/him . plunderer

────────────────────── ✥ ──────────────────────

I sat nestled against the warm scales of Buck, with our self-proclaimed mother standing just a few steps away on our side of the table. She was large enough to engulf the room with her wings, with just a single spread covering the five dragons like an over-sized blanket, but she opted to keep them close by her side as if they were a cape. Buck was just a bit smaller than her in almost every capacity, but still he sat close to me, using his own wings as a means to lift myself up and look a bit larger than I actually was. I had to wonder if mother wished I was as big as Buck, but then I wouldn't be as swift, and mother couldn't appreciate that, I believed. The two of them argued over me some times, if or not I should come with them. I was cunning like my mother, but both her and Buck were cunning too, as well as strong. I could sometimes be fast enough to knock another out, but I opted to watch from a distance to their displeasure. The two outsiders that sat on the other side of our wooden bench were almost as big as Buck. The lady who called herself "Thalassa" and the man who called himself "Orpheus" must not have been as accustomed to the Wilds as we were, for their eyes were shifty and uncomfortable, and their wings could not appear to sit anywhere as still as the six of ours were. I desperately wanted to stretch my head over the table and speak, but mother said youngest was to speak last. No dragon or beastclanner could question such an orderly fashion for discussing such deeds.

"Madam Thalassa, Sir Orpheus," my mother chimed, her voice as soft and smooth as the velvety chairs we'd opted to sit on. I felt it dear to my heart that I knew a part of her melodious speaking that these dragons would never hear, the sound of it gliding along the wind as a song. Not even Buck had heard it, for I'd snuck underneath the wrappings of a warm blanket one night and to my mothers room, and listened as she held her head high as if a wolf howling to the moon and spoke in a way I'd never hear again. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance this fine evening," she told them, taking her talons and grasping a glass-blown cup and pressing it up against her mouth. I knew from experience that the words, despite how soft to the ear, were nothing but lies to envelop them in a sense of comfort. "I'm sure you have quite the reasoning to track us down here," mother signaled Pola for another drink, setting the cup back down.

Thalassa must have found it inside of herself to speak first, as she raised her claws to the table. "I've heard of your strifes, Alanica, and really it's quite impressive what you've achieved." Pola had finished with her concoction and placed it in front of mother, who, despite Thalassa stopping in preparation for her to acknowledge the polite words, only took another long and drawn-out sip. The ridgeback's tone turned slightly more sour, "Me and my husband are in need of you and your sons' skills."

Her husband, who had been shamefully silent the whole time, suddenly added on to her words, "There's another ship out at shore that's been pulling in more catches than us. We are unable to take over it's territory without reasoning, and our crew hasn't been able to put anything together for a case."

"Irreparable damage, or even enough damage to take them out for the month, will be enough for us." Thalassa finished. I was in a bit of awe in how interconnected they seemed to be with each other- even if they'd prepared this speech beforehand. My mother flicked the end of her green-tipped tail, a sign that freed Buck and allowed him to speak. There was no directory for her motions that was linked to me. Only my brother could allow me to speak up with a similar move of his own tail.

"Destroy the ship? We prefer to loot and assassinate over destruction, we're not that unmannerous, ma'am. If we were to turn on our values, the price better reflect that. The three of us ain't doin' all this for a little reward. They'll know exactly who to pin it on." Buck's voice was not that of my mothers. It was thick with an accent neither of us could pinpoint the origin of. He couldn't muster a song for the life of him, but, in his defense, he did sound more like the western fantasies dragons farther near the shore had of us, which gave us some credit.

Thalassa's own strifes were

"Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in
In my head, in my heart, in my soul --
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again,
Well, I don't know, I don't know."
