Blood spattered the yellowing grass Arrix was sitting on as she coughed uncontrollably for the fifth time today. With an annoyed sniff, he grabbed the pouch that rested across her waist and pulled open the drawstrings, revealing finely ground mushrooms and other herbs resting at the bottom of the rough-hewn fabric. Arrix pinched the concoction, bringing it to her mouth and resting it under her tongue as she closed her eyes, trying her best to not taste the bitter iron tang.
At home, she sat with her mother as she soothed the skydancer’s ailing system, the soup bowl in front of them bursting with a sour medicinal stench as the night waned. Her mother, beside her, grabbed the cool, damp rag that lay beside them on the table to place it on her hatchling’s forehead. The coughing fit continued for a few minutes, Arrix’s hand twitching to her pouch as she struggled against the urge to grab a pinch of her fungus mixture with her mother right beside her. Gently, his mother pulled them up to lead them to their bedroom to have them lie down.

leaves-L-20231018114528.png Under the covers and as soon as Arrix’s mother left the room, he yanked open their pouch, grabbing a pinch to put in their mouth, immediately relaxing as his makeshift medicine relaxed their throat and muscles. The mixtures and brews that his mother made for him lay beside him, half-used and discarded. With disdain, the ill dragon turned to face the wall to stop looking at the concoctions that didn’t work, that hadn’t worked for months. To be fair, no blame could be put on his beloved mother; after all, it was hard to cure something no one knew existed. His fingers traced the burlap pouch on his waist, no bigger than the palm of his hand – it was light and deflated. He would have to pick some more mushrooms up soon.
Soreness rippled through Arrix’s muscles as she travelled through the dense wood, groaning a bit as she trampled down a small hill before all of a sudden, her footing was lost under her. With a startled cry, he felt his face land on the luckily soft ground and rolled down the hill, stopping with pained gasps as he felt an aching around her left ankle. With a tired groan, she sat up, rubbing her head as she glanced down, where she let out a second, even more startled, cry.
A small red patch of familiar-looking mushrooms had sprouted from Arrix’s outer ankle, their crimson tips peeking through her fur as though staring up at her with hopeful eyes. Curiously, he poked at the stems, tracing them into her flesh as though it was just another limb. Her claws curled around one of them. Pop. It slid from her skin as though plucking a small clump of fur out, and she grinned as the sap dripped from the wound. It looked exactly the same as the mushrooms she needed to heal herself. He blinked as he felt another similar ache under his wings, and a smile spread from his mouth.
What a blessing this was.
