to have made their home in its walls. Caves and crannies here were well-known (though few had been forgotten for nearly so long), and techniques to dry the space and make it liveable were freely shared. Her brother... well.

He was not often home. He helped where he could, and his part was largely in gathering - materials, food, supplies... and people, of course. Farallon had not expected many to wish to join them - this deep, there was no natural sunlight, and the weight of the water outside was nearly overwhelming. While the caves were warm and cozy enough by now, the trek to reach them was something else entirely.

But her brother found people, nonetheless. Strange people. The Orchard-Keeper was the first. An Imperial, bedecked in bright jewels but claws well-callused from tilling soil. She came when she'd heard of the orchard. She did not say where she was from. She kept to herself, taking up residence with them, keeping the caverns lit and breathable, feeding them and those who wandered by.

When Farallon stared into the depths, waiting for her brother's return from some adventure, the Orchard-Keeper would sometimes come and sit with her. Four eyes, they decided, were better than one - best to confuse the abyss' gaze, so it did not know where to look.

Next came the Augur, an older Coatl who had not been invited by Tethyan but had followed him from his wanderings. She had seen something in him that worried her, and come to speak with his family. Farallon could not reassure her, and so she decided to stay - to watch, to wait, to do what she could.

Then the Quartermaster came - well, an apprentice clockwork tinkerer at the time. She did not come to the clan for its strangeness, but had met Farallon long ago during the siblings' earlier wanderings. Young and without a clan of her own, she sought out her old friend and found herself not at all put off by the dark, or the damp, or the overwhelming feeling of being watched.

She decided, instead, to watch back - and set herself to work carving a great dual-sided clock face into the wall of the Trench beside the cave's entrance. Its outer face and hands were brilliantly lit by a thin poultice made from of the orchard fruits, so that it could act as a lighthouse and guide others there. As the clock was directly above the rooms Farallon had set aside for storage, the young Obelisk took the title of Quartermaster - and with it the responsibility of handling requisitions for supplies.

With that title came a theme - though under the water and not over it, here at sea Farallon was Captain, and the clan was Crew. Tethyan, as First Mate, continued his wanderings, and through those he met along the way, one by one the clan grew. Wanderers, outcasts, nobodies and demigods alike found there way there - not all were invited to stay, but every one was given at least a warm meal, fresh air, clean water, a story or two, and a warning. First from the Augur, later from all who stayed, who saw her advice for the wisdom it was.

Go no deeper.

As the only source of light in those depths, the clock face attracted attention from more than just wanderers. So Farallon sought out dragons who would come to act as guards. Thus entered the Captain of the Guard, who with the help of his First and Second Officers established marked routes up and out of the Trench - such paths existed connecting other caves and clans closer to the surface, but the Crew had been too distant to make use of them.

Now, at last, a return to sunlight was not
