Biography

Garwyn | he/him | retired guard | elder

Garwyn embodies the spirits of all the proud Water dragons who helped shape him. He's calm, cool, and collected even in the gravest of situations; he's built broad and strong from a diet of fresh fish; and he's willing to go with the flow, trusting the currents to lead him.

A child of Sunbeam Grotto who returned long after the clan returned from hibernation, Garwyn is still adjusting to all the changes his home has undergone during his time away. Now that he's returned to his birthplace, he's reluctant to leave, and after an initial trip to move his belongings from his undersea city home he's only traveled back a handful of times for alumni duties.

Since his homecoming, Garwyn has reunited amicably with his younger siblings, Moonstone, Blight, and Galaxy, as well as his mother. He's incredibly grateful to Moonstone for reaching out to him, of course, especially considering they'd never met - Garwyn left Sunbeam Grotto shortly before the triplets hatched. Count is proud to welcome his son back to the Grotto, especially since he can brag about his accolades. Garwyn has most benefited from the company of old friends from his youth with whom he feels he can most closely relate - Glowworm, Verbena, and Phantasm, just to name a few.

Shortly after Garwyn moved away from Sunbeam Grotto as a juvenile, enticed by an offer to become a member of the guard in a richly decorated undersea city, disaster struck the entire region in the form of a great storm - tearing the sea from end to end and ripping away countless lives, including that of the Tidelord. As he and his fellow guard members struggled to contain the rising panic below the sea, Garwyn's heart was with his home - adrift, wondering whether they had managed to weather the storm. Dragons spent their lives practicing and pretending to control the elements, but the natural powers of the world were so great, and dragons so small in comparison...

As more and more news flooded in from all the corners of the sea, carried by wayward refugees from clans lost to the storm, any hope Garwyn held for the survival of his own family ebbed away. It wasn't until he had formally graduated training that he was able to venture out on his own to confirm...indeed, though he followed the currents all along the shore that once held Sunbeam Grotto, there were no signs of life. Not anymore.

Garwyn carried this heavy heart as he threw himself into his work, battling off the pervasive guilt that threatened to throw him off course. As the first years of the restoration effort continued on, his new home flourished; the influx of refugees caused a population boom, and endless volunteers were willing and able to scour the seafloor for salvage and survivors. He felt for them, truly - they were all motivated in kind, searching to squeeze out every last drop of their grief and put it toward something useful. Through it all, Garwyn served as a dedicated protector; sentinel for a home he might yet be able to save.

Time passed, as it often does. Though he never expected it, Garwyn soon found his wounds had not healed, but scabbed over. The pain was no longer searing, fresh; it ached, and might continue to for a long time, but he could push past it, knowing he wouldn't - couldn't - have acted any different if he'd had a chance to relive the situation. After all, who could have predicted such a thing?

His tireless work earned one commendation after the next; Garwyn rose in the ranks, becoming a lauded general of the guard, a position that he held with pride, untainted by the enduring hollow in his heart. He found great fulfillment in training new guard members, passing down knowledge picked up over his many years. Long after Garwyn should have retired, he finally did, and then his life changed course yet again.

To think that a simple letter could foist as much turmoil upon him as the great storm.

The sun was so bright above the surface. He'd all but forgotten the brilliant heat and light it radiated, after many, many years of acclimation to the few stray sunbeams that braved the depths of the sea. Garwyn's eyes were used to the dull glow of bioluminescence, but the bright sun wasn't the only shock to his system when he finally broke the surface of the Sea after a lifetime spent under it.

As his eyes struggled to adjust to the influx of light and color, the view before him slowly swam into focus, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt the very truth he'd been so reluctant to accept. Sunbeam Grotto still stood, proudly and puzzlingly, decades after he'd ensured for himself that it was lost to the sea. Despite all the evidence that this was, indeed, real - his brother's letter, sent years too late; the unmistakable speckle of sea caves etched into the cliffs ahead, the faces of his old clanmates reflected in those of the younger generation running about the beach - Garwyn kept his guard raised as he rose from the water and stepped onto the shores in a latent homecoming. Could it be? And how?
