Unhatched Ice Egg

Are dragons simply born to a role, or do they have the strength to break ties and decide their own path?
Those were the thoughts that kept a young Aodhán awake at night.

Born to a line of expert Blacksmiths, the dragon was taught from a young age his role, and what was expected of him. As with everything he did, the cheerful dragon completed his tasks with a smile and a laugh but when alone at night, he couldn't help his mind wander... what more was out there?
There weren't many opportunities to leave the Ashfall Waste for the youngest blacksmiths, but when one came to gather ores and raw materials from the Southern Icefields, the dragon jumped at the chance. A land so different from what he knew, he wasn't sure what wonders it would hold.
Or the dangers.
Separated from the more experienced traveling companion who guided the way during a fierce snowstorm, the dragon was left to wander the Icefields alone, injured and weak.

That was when he was picked up by the healer of the clan by the sea; taken in, patched up, and fed. Aodhán was astonished by the tiny size of the lair, simply observing the way they worked during his time of bedrest. It was a mismatch of different dragons, different backgrounds and roles, and yet, it seemed to work. The dragons at home were plentiful and he was sure they would not miss one body, and so, he decided to stay at this tiny clan.

Without the facility or need for blacksmithing at the lair, he felt a little redundant at first. Following on scouts and guard shifts, but never finding a role that suited him well. Aodhán tried to not be disheartened, not fully being able to repay the clan that had taken him in during his moment of need. Still, he remained cheerful and a welcomed presence in the clan... even gaining the acceptance of the Skydancer who had been the most cautious of him at first.
She relaxed enough around him to allow him to observe how she crafted her own materials and ways to keep the clan, and the dragons within it, safe and comfortable. The pair grew closer, Demetria confessing her reasons behind her initial hesitation towards him, as unfair as she felt it was, Aodhán understood when she told the story of her past.
The two eventually becoming close, sharing scouts and meals together.

Dragons often came to the lair, not to stay but to nest and move on once their offspring arrived. Many stayed with the eggs to guard them, but much to Aodhán's shock, some would simply have to leave and await for when the messenger of the clan brought them to safety. The first time he had witnessed the ice eggs resting in their barren nest, the fire dragon was struck with how alike crystals they were. The eggs nothing like the ones back home; these were crystalline ice. Looking so delicate as they rested together in the nest. The fire dragon was hesitant at first, recoiling away from making contact with them; concerned his warmer body temperature would disturb, or worst, damage the eggs and so he laid himself paces away and kept watch. No danger had ever come to any eggs before at the clan, but he was not allowing there to be first.

Life was precious, and he would protect it so the dragons within could find their own paths.

It was Demetria who convinced him he would bring no damage to the eggs, Ice eggs were not as fragile as they appeared. She was the one he set to seek out at the first sign of movement of the first pair he watched over, and it was her who reassured him that even though the twins appeared ablaze this was simply their natural colours and Aodhán did no damage to them, the opposite true as the young hatchlings gravitated towards his warmth. She would often stay with him and worked on her craft in quiet as the pair kept each other and the eggs in quiet company.
When the Star Sea twins were born, Aodhán stepped up more and watched the pair grow while their parents rested. It was the first time he understood fear, turning around to see the twins he had been meant to be watching over vanished. It was a fear that gripped the heart and made it impossible to breath, he fled, Demetria followed. Fear quickly turned to rage upon what he found, the twins under threat from a dragon of their own clan. To subject such terror on those so small for a simple mistake was an injustice that made his blood boil, more so what the hatchlings had to witness in his attempts to deescalate the situation. No one so young should have had to see blood spilt.

It was only with Demetria’s intervention that calmed the situation, it was a side to her he knew existed but had never seen before.

It was clear how much she cared for the clan, to the point she often forgot about looking after herself. Aodhán always made sure to nudge Demetria into looking after herself. She had a fierce quiet strength behind her, but even the strongest needed to take their own rest. He thought he lost her once, and then once again. That was a torment he never wished to go through again.
