Origins

It began in the Starwood.

At least, that's where the first reports emerged, of strange lights in the Strand at night, stranger than the glowing trees. These lights moved, and dragons reported seeing something that looked like dragons where no clans lived, dragons that vanished in the daylight.

An enterprising young fae was the first to approach the area at night, curiosity driving her to seek out the lights and dragon shapes in the trees.

The shadows of the trees cast bars of light and dark as she traveled closer, until those strange dragon-shapes loomed over her, as tall as the Starwood trees themselves. Their translucence and ethereal glow was as nothing she'd known before. Up close, in the dark, she could see that their hides were maps of the cosmos, twinkling as the very skies.

She knew then that these dragons were not the same as those that lingered on the Starfall Isles.

“What are you?” she asked, but the strangers did not respond. Not in the words of a language she knew. A sound passed through them, one more akin to the rustling of the trees. One of the enormous dragon-shapes edged closer, and as the strange lights played across it she could see its horns, as twisted and yet strangely beautiful as the trees themselves. ‘An Imperial,’ she thought, before it reached out to touch her.

When its foreclaw made delicate contact with her forelimb, she was no longer certain of anything.

The impression she felt from this… dragon?... was one of great age, a life lived in silence and stillness, until one day it seemed to awaken for the first time, and began to explore. It felt, more than anything else, like the trees around them. She saw an image of herself through this creature’s eyes, as though it were superimposed on a leaf.

Even as she tried to understand, the impression faded, as the being seemed to take what it needed from the contact. Another ripple passed through the dragon-shapes around her, before they simply melted into the trees. Whether that was appearance or reality, she couldn’t say.

Her tale was shrugged off, even by the curious souls of the Starfall Isles. Tales of dragons as strange as the trees themselves, dragons that might well be the trees come to life? That had to be absurd.

But the fae girl knew what she had seen, and she returned to the Strand again and again.

When she finally caught a distant glimpse of the beings again, they still looked mostly like strangely translucent Imperials - except for one. This time, she could have sworn there was a Fae among them, a Fae that looked just like her except for the constellations in her hide and the glass of her wings.

She never caught sight of the dragons again, but she remains convinced to this day that what she saw weren’t dragons at all. She swears they were the souls of the Starwood trees themselves.
