Though her clan now prospers, and Bhaal herself is hailed as god-like, things weren’t always this way. Her younger years were spent hard-fought to earn the opulence she sits in now, and the scars on her hide speak of past bloodshed louder than any words could. It’s been a long time since Bhaal razed a clan to the ground, but the twist of her lips and glint in her eyes do well to keep any would-be enemies neatly in their place: kneeling at her talons. Keen eyes can still pick out remnants of enemy lairs in Bhaal’s own lair even today.
Despite her bloodied past, Bhaal’s people see her as a gracious and protective matriarch. Many dragons in her lair were taken in by Bhaal herself, given food and shelter, and even access to the Ruby Pools if they were injured. Her years of overt intimidation are long past, and now Bhaal does seem to make an effort to communicate with unruly outsiders and troublesome lairmates alike. Of course, her history casts a dark shadow on any negotiations she takes part of, and all other parties end up bending to her will in the end. It’s her gentle yet firm voice that blind Bhaal’s followers to the manipulation in her dealings, and also part of what’s earned her such a following in the first place. Most fail to see the cunning cruelty in her actions, and those that do are left unsure of themselves. Could she be so cutthroat when so many see her as a savior? When she selflessly provides shelter for so many, supports the lair with her very blood? Surely they are mistaken. Could they even do anything if they were right?
Bhaal’s hold over the lair is absolute. Even when her dealings are considered unfavorable, none dare to speak up, either for fear of confronting such a divine figure or what would come after. One such deal would be allowing researchers from other clans and other flights access to the Ruby Pools. Their access is strictly for research purposes and highly regulated. In return, exports from other territories are brought to Bhaal’s clan. Regardless of the bounty it provides, many dislike this arrangement due to the sudden invasion of what once was a place wholly secluded from the outside world. Some even view it as a perversion of the sanctity of the Ruby Pools. Such things remain unspoken and forcefully banished from the mind, however. The truest followers of Bhaal would allow no such heresy, even if it came from their own mind.
Bhaal has many devout followers, but only a chosen few are allowed into her inner circle. The closest of these would be Darkrai, Tiamat, and Claymore. Darkrai and Tiamat are two of the many who view Bhaal as a true god amongst mortals, and act as her right and left hand. Very rarely are they seen away from her side.
Claymore is the attending magus of the core and Bhaal’s chosen consort, and as such holds the most power in the clan aside from Bhaal herself. Should Bhaal be unavailable, the core turns to Claymore. This arrangement is met with little to no resistance from the clan, though some remain uncertain of Claymore’s trustworthiness. However, few say anything beyond a passing comment; even if little is known about the Bogsneak herself, Bhaal’s followers know that none could deceive her. The exact details of the relationship between the two remain just as quiet as the Guardian herself, but it’s clear that Bhaal holds a great amount of trust in the strange Bogsneak.
Despite being the indisputable matriarch of the lair, Bhaal has arranged an intricate government to manage the clan. The core leads the lair, and is split into two courts: the inner court, to manage the lair as a whole, and the outer court, to handle smaller tasks. Bhaal, of course, oversees both, though takes part in the inner court more frequently. Those within the court are actually seen as leaders of the lair in their own right, though all default to the prime broodmother, Bhaal.
Aside from the core, there is Rook, Bhaal’s chosen representative. Not all take kindly to Bhaal’s methods, and Rook serves to smooth over any issues caused by her intimidating presence and gruesome past. Rook has sat beside Bhaal long before she truly rose to power, and was one of the first dragons she personally sheltered from the Scarred Wastelands. He is more amiable than Bhaal herself and less cryptic than Claymore, and for this and his extended loyalty Bhaal chose him to speak for her. As far as she knows, he’s as loyal as any of her followers.
Bhaal interacts directly with her lair very rarely. Instead, most interactions are done through Rook or the Scarlet Convent. This is a calculated move to secure her divine image, to create further separation from herself and others. Of course, she still makes appearances in the Hallowed Market and Underdark, but few in the lair have been lucky or bold enough to directly speak to her. After all, what right have they to speak to a god
