BARGHEST LORE AND LINEAGE PROJECT

GENERATION II
ANKH'S LINE

Sw-ords.png

"Fear not the reaper."

M ost cursed creatures find their way to the Garden, walking the ruins of Arcadia that once held an ancient hub of civilization. Those who dare to walk these cobbled streets now find themselves jumping at shadows, questioning whether the faint wisp they saw was one of those cursed creatures, or the odd drakes that now walked in their wake. Some fear they may join them, but one statuesque hound stands out among them, herding them on their way to destinations unknown.

This is the tale of the Barghest Ermine.

It was not clear when they became sentient. At first they were nothing more than ancient stones, gradually worn away by trickling water and the claws of a beast. Like many of the artifacts that rested in the Vault of Kings, Ankh had been sent to collect them.

At some point, the stones began to dream. They dreamed of an existence before their lives began. Of a time when they were called ‘the reaper’s stones’, for they enabled any who possessed them to enter the underworld. Their legend was old. It was said that long ago the twin stones had been stolen from the gateway to the afterlife. Some said they were enchanted. Others described them as cursed artifacts. Yet objects is all that they ever were until Ankh placed them beneath the great statue that they now called their mother.

Medusa hummed when she saw them. She had become a favorite among the treasures that Ankh guarded and he often brought her gifts in the form of other, smaller artifacts that he had been sent to collect. If they were made of stone, Medusa’s own gift would grant them life and she thought herself a mother to these children. Ankh would carve them and Medusa would breathe a new life into their forms.

The Reaper’s Stones had ancient names from long before they came to life. The first was a bright white stone called ‘Ermine’ inlaid with streaks of marbled micha. It was once used to correspond with spirits and see past the veil of the afterlife. The second was a dark stone called ‘Atratus’, meaning ‘cowled in black’. This was also called the stone of immortality for it was said to allow those who held it not only the ability to walk among the spirit realm, but to freeze their own forms against time and thereby cheat death for as long as the stone remained in their clutches.

Now, with a life of their own, the twins circled the strange vault where they were born. . . seeking a small crack where they might slip off into the world.

  • Living stone used to talking to spirits
  • Often tried to help them "move on"
  • Didn't know she was also diving into dreams to make memories move on
  • Aka, her dream eating was erasing memories of the dead
  • Only caught when she tried to eat the memories of an old Imperial in the Garden of the Eleven named Kaurik
  • Turned out he was still very much alive
  • Helped her set up her own little spot in the rebuilding project in Arcadia
  • One of the few Barghests with some semblance of control
  • Often uses her old stone abilities to help others move on from a loss
  • Always offers to snatch memories as well to eat if they're hurting too much
  • Was at peace until a tiny chaos noodle dropped in and caused her makeshift home to be overgrown with strange new plants
  • Ofc it was Samhain's doing (they were infamous among the Barghests)
  • Got snappish and bit Writ when he tried to write the noodle off
  • Now has to deal with Samhain 24/7 while helping Writ get passed his old life
  • Not that bad in the end
