the lord of the desert and vanquisher of apophis, protector of the sun-god ra, set is the god of storms, chaos and war. originally a trickster-god embodying the necessary and creative influence of disorder, he is best known for his role in the myth of osiris, his brother: set murdered osiris, usurped his throne, and dismembered his corpse, and later feuded with osiris' son horus for rightful kingship.
set was worshipped as a positive influence in many periods of dynastic egypt, often in prominent roles - as horus' equal in kingship, reflecting the pair's reconciliation at the end of the osiris myth, the symbolic union of upper and lower egypt, and the necessary coexistence of order and chaos; as a martial god who sowed discord among egypt’s enemies; and as one of the principal gods of the pantheon, with many pharaohs honouring him with their names. as patron god of the desert, and by extension the lands beyond the desert, set was traditionally associated with foreigners. with the decline of egypt's empire and its eventual conquest by several successive foreign empires, set was vilified. he was identified with egypt's invaders, and became synonymous with evil. worship of set was replaced by rituals re-enacting his defeat by horus, and his image was effaced from monuments. | __________ |
