VIII・XII・MMXXII
I don’t remember how we interacted when I was a child. When I saw you weekly for years, your visits were stressful. I’d rush to push, shove, scrub, and hide the mess I’d unleashed in just 7 days. And I’d feel horrible knowing you might see it and have to take care of it yourself.
Even though the experience I associated you with was unpleasant, I, along with the rest of my family, all loved you. So polite and sweet, joyful, and kind. Beautiful, with a delicate voice that you never once raised at any of us.
You praised my art, and asked to take one of my drawings for your child. I didn’t think my art was good enough for any of that, but I was happy to be able to gift you something and thankful for the recognition and once again, the kindness.
I remember how you and my mom comforted one another in your shared grief. How I dreamed of Nana to learn the next day, that it had been the Day of the Dead. And that you’d given recommendations to my mom on how to reach her. When Mom and I started crying on the day before the move, you did the same. Pure empathy, when you let me hug you with tears dripping down my face. When you brought your relatives, your friends, to let us move out on time when we were exhausted and downtrodden and out of options. You did far more to help my family than I did for the months leading up to that move. The rice recipe you gave to us, Mexican vanilla you’d brought back from home, writing and texts from you to my mom. Reminders, along with memories of you, we will cherish. It shouldn’t have happened this way. I know God has his plan, but from my human perspective it’s so so wrong. It wasn’t your time. It can’t have been, not for someone like you.
We love you Lupita. I love you. You are a treasure and your life is something to be celebrated. Thank you for everything.
