Born with the name Skaznarika Argent-Parlance, to a pair of dwarven musicians from ancient, established families in the classical music scene. Her mother, Urmatryd Parlance, is an operatic singer in a bass range, and is very strict. Her father, Raddeam Argent, is an accompanist to his wife, playing all string instruments, but specializing in cello.

SKUNK is the youngest of many children by far, with all of her older siblings being approx. 50 years older than her. All of her siblings (of which there are many; she never really bothered counting) are accomplished musicians in a number of disparate instruments; wind and strings, pianos and organs, vocal and even percussive. All operate within the confines of typical classical music. SKUNK was born incapable of accessing her head voice, aka the tone of singing needed to be an operatic singer, so that was right out (essentially, her voice is naturally scratchy af). She began to train with string instruments, but was naturally rowdy and inattentive in lessons. Enter: Bennie.

Bennie is the daughter of the Argent-Parlance family’s head maid, Jovraegrett Bristlebraid. Her full first name is Benotaine, but everyone has always called her Bennie. She and SKUNK were childhood best friends, when they got into mischief around their estate in the wealthiest district of Uthurlia. Seeing that SKUNK would rather spend time with Bennie than with her practicing, Raddeam decided to extend an invitation to Bennie to join their lessons.

Due to her attentiveness in class, Bennie caught up and surpassed SKUNK in their shared violin lessons, and then again with viola, cello, brass, woodwinds, percussion, absolutely everything Raddeam tried to teach to get SKUNK interested. Where they differed was in creativity; while Bennie could play the notes on the page flawlessly, she had difficulty inserting emotion or any minor improvisation with dynamics or tempo. Meanwhile, SKUNK thrived on improvisation, essentially writing her own songs on the fly as she played, infused with emotion. Although, these compositions were far from classical. Many instruments were destroyed at SKUNK’s hands in that household, in a fit of rampant emotion.

Still, despite the chafing their relationship endured during lessons, Bennie and SKUNK remained close friends into their teenage years. It was then that SKUNK made a shocking discovery; both of her parents’ ancestors used to be families of bards, and that her own parents were taught and practiced magic before the ban. She confronted her parents about this, and they told her to sit down and shut up or she’d be thrown out of the house. SKUNK refused, continuing to research the subject of bardic magics on her own. When her parents discovered this, they attempted to trap her in the cellar of their mansion, which they claimed was to protect her from her own recklessness. Bennie snuck down there and set her free. They fled to the edge of the estate, where Bennie hesitated. She said she wanted to stay behind, to continue to learn from Raddeam, to hopefully be able to become a professional musician and make enough money so her mother could retire early, so her family could live without having to work so hard. So they tearfully parted ways; SKUNK into the city, and Bennie back into that house.
