Steven Grant works on the databases at the Gagarin Launchpad. He lives in the Twenty-Sider Inn a few miles outside the Air Force base he works on. He's loved rocket science ever since he was a kid, and his knowledge of mathematics and computer systems is almost encyclopedic. He's averse to bugs, being completely vegan to avoid them; but he'll obsessively weed out computer bugs for hours. Despite his love of math and hardware, Steven doesn't have a degree of his own. But he knows his way around any operating system dragonkind has invented, and he can keep a machine running like no one else.

Unbeknownst to Steven, he's actually the alter of another man named Marc Spector. Marc (and Steven) are only alive because Marc made a pact with a nonelemental deity to save their life. As part of his pact, Marc is the sworn protector of travelers at night. But in resurrecting himself and his system, he wanted to give Steven the best life he could have, since it wasn't Steven's decision to become a god's mercenary. So he moved to the middle of nowhere so that Steven could put his rocketry knowledge to use, while Marc worried about fulfilling his deity's commands on his own.
