The past mostly exists in flashes of memory. The teeth. The hole in his wing. Plummeting through the sky in which he should soar like a demon. Many posit that Hardgaze took the name due to the claw-sharp stare he utilizes in moments of intimidation—but truly, he wears that mantel because of just how difficult it is for him to turn his four eyes inward and recall who he was before Hardgaze. Before, when he wandered. When he sought little more than his next hunt to tear into with vicious teeth. Truly the oddest part of being unable to remember his past is the fact that another dragon has instead become the center of his world. Softscale, the low-speaking fae, so sweet, so filled with light, that he barely lets her leave his side. She might be the size of a gnat compared to him, but the heat that fills his heart when he sees her soft pastels means that she is irrepressibly his—and he, hers. He watches her closer than he imagine Softscale notices. And perhaps that is why he can see the path to greatness that this little, often forgotten dragon is destined for. |
