Wispy, Part 1, Interlude
???
~

Continued from Murky Part 1

The shadows on this wings hadn't moved for some time afterwards, which disappointed the Imperial, for Thimbleweed always loved watching them dance. But now that he'd made an example out of Murky, he had other matters to attend to.

Every soul-shadow still kept their distance from Wispy and Murky, but the two shared thoughts private from Thimbleweed.

Don't listen to him, Wispy said, directing its thoughts to Murky.

But what if it's true? Murky countered plaintively. We have no memory of anything before he took us.

Thimbleweed is a liar, you know this.

But only he knows the truth now.

Wispy stayed silent for a long time, not knowing how to answer. It was true, what Murky had said, and the both of them, like most of the shadows the Imperial had ensnared, had lost their memories over time. They had become shadows of what they once were.

And there was one thing they could never do: warn the living, or risk losing themselves entirely.

Please don't rebel again, Wispy begged, embracing Murky once more. I can't lose you, too...

Nor I you,
Murky's thoughts hushed. I'm sorry...

Their whispers began to draw in the other shadows. One by one they came, drifting over and embracing the two, offering sympathies. Not one wanted to see another soul be taken, but what could they do? They all knew then that if they tried warning Cerith of Thimbleweed's plans, they would be no more.

For now, they were bound to him forever...

...but which fate was worse?
