The Grim
The Grim
The second of Loki and Angrboda's hatchlings, Hela inherited her mother's protective instinct. Despite being hatched a Fae, Hela often feels more like a Guardian: although small, from a young age she became the self-appointed protector of her elder brother, Askr, and her other siblings as Loki and Angrboda’s family grew. It takes a great deal to goad her into a fight, but once started, nothing but victory can quench Hela's fury. Her clutch-brother Askr often compares her in these rare situations to a half-spined Ridgeback - much to her annoyance. However, it has been noted by the rest of the Clan that he is not far wrong. However, her real talent is her ability to calm heated tempers with her mere presence. This may be less to do with her air of serenity than it is due to her appearance and demeanour. Her skull-like mask gives her a rather forbidding air; most strangers fear her glowing, green-eyed gaze, and even some members of the Clan are reluctant to meet her eyes. She walks and flies in complete silence, no matter the terrain or weather; her dark colouring allows her to hide in the shadows until she chooses to be seen; and she can operate even on a cloudy, moonless night with as much accuracy and speed as if it were a bright and sunny day. When combined with her natural Fae stoicism and remote demeanour, these dubious gifts from the Arcanist give her an almost ethereal quality, and most are loath to cross her. In fact, the majority of dragons are reluctant to know her at all. She is glad, most of the time, that they keep their distance. She likes to pretend that these were all of the gifts the Arcanist gave her - but she knows better. She was given another ability by the magics of the Starfall Isles, as terrible a curse as any of her siblings' more extreme physical alterations. From a very early age, Hela has been plagued by dark dream-visions of the future. The only others who know of it are Askr and Loki. She often confers with her father on what she sees, and is an asset to the Clan as a result - but both father and daughter would trade the invaluable information she provides in exchange for a normal life for her. However, not even her clutch-brother Askr knows the worst of it. Hela's foresight is also triggered when she touches a dragon for the first time - and knows, instantly, when and where and how they will die. The first times this happened - with her father, her mother and her clutch-brother - she was too young to recall what she saw. Yet with every other dragon she meets, including her younger siblings and every member of the Clan, she cannot escape the prescience of their demise. As a result of her powers, Hela is cautious around those she has not yet touched. Even with new members of the Clan, she will go out of her way to avoid physical contact: delaying the grief that will follow her inevitable vision. Combined with her deep, sonorous voice and melancholy demeanour, this can often make her seem unfriendly. However, most realise this could not be further from the truth once she has finally seen their death and it is safe for her to touch them again. She may still be wary of physical affection, but like her clutch-brother, she is friendly and kind to those she is close to, and many in the Clan count her a good friend. She is quite serious and does not bear fools gladly: she is sometimes irritated by the antics of her brother Jormungandr and the hatchlings as a result. Yet she is not opposed to fun, only to what she sees as unnecessary risk. The only dragon whose touch she does not flinch from is Askr. Although both dragons are now adults, they have not spent a day apart since they were hatched, and still prefer to sleep curled close together in the same nest - a fact which their future mates will need to come to terms with, if the match is to be a success. Recently Hela has been taking an interest in a new addition to the Clan, a young Fae with eyes and scales alike a vivid shade of blue, who she has yet to work up the courage to touch … |
