About the name: Pure gypsum is usually white (like the frosty parts of her accent), but thanks to several impurities, it also comes in several other colours, including some vibrant blues and reds. This is a nod to plague flight where "impurities" being a bad thing is absolutely in the eye of the beholder. Really they're just another way to toughen up and evolve from the "pure" (read: fragile) state, right?

Furthermore, research also shows that gypsum can be used to remove poisonous substances like arsenic and lead from the waters they've contaminated. Just like the plague flight to know exactly how to take on and then neutralize a few toxins.

On a metaphysical lore level, gypsum is said to "be a strong energy conductor that encourages energetic flow, cleansing, removal of blockages, and strengthening." It is also said to be great at repairing damage in order to obtain a more desirable balance of energy.

I happen to think the idea of taking on and clearing contaminants, repairing the damage done, then gaining a desirable, stronger balance is pretty plague-like.

Then, finally, you have the nods at Water through the breed, the fishy noxtide gene, and the water emblem which fit in nicely with the fact that Gypsum forms easily in large beds from the precipitation of saline waters (and also dissolves easily in water as a result). We'll say this Gypsum's water emblem protects her from any similiar fate - saline water is in her blood, so to speak, but she won't dissolve in it.
