Biography

"So there I was, deep in a remote jungle
village, when the elders begged me to find
a mystical stone that had been stolen from
them, and rescue their younglings from an
evil death goddess-worshipping cult!"
Garrison Gulch II is a fourth generation explorer tasked with carrying on his family's illustrious name in their guild for relic hunters. His distant forebears were first generation Obelisks born of stone deep in the murk of the jungle, and adventuring has been in their blood since the very beginning. But while his ancestors were keen scholars and collectors of antiquities, Gulch Jr's motivations for joining the family business are much less academic. Attracted to the gold and glory of treasure seeking, the young Obelisk, while very learned in the fields of archeology and history, is rather more reckless and carefree than his kin.

It was on a previous quest that Gulch visited the charged desert, staying in the lair of The Lastsparks to borrow their resources and knowledge of the region in return for a share of the spoils. This arrangement was successful and became permanent, though the jaunty obelisk's antics caused a little friction at the beginning, with the purists of the clan seeing Gulch as an unscrupulous risk-taker who cared more about the money he could make from relics rather than their intellectual value. Gulch himself freely admitted that all to be perfectly true, but argued no matter what his incentives were, he still got results.

There are some who draw the line at Gulch's occasional use of the ancient artifacts that he discovers. His ostentatious dinosaur wing and tail guards recently caused a sensation with the clan's curator, who exploded with indignation at the very idea of fossils being worn as apparel! A touch of professional jealousy may play a part in some of the disagreements the obelisk gets involved in, but other times it's more personal. Digger and Gulch have tussled more than once, both being popular dragons who see each other as rivals. Threatened by the newcomer and his fast rapport with the residents, Digger took an instant disliking to the cheeky and boastful Gulch, who in turn recognised the quieter ridgeback as one of most well-liked of the den, and therefore competition. Large and powerful dragons, the pair never see eye to eye on anything and if they have to work together it usually ends in a brawl.

Those who love storytelling, though, flock to Gulch when he returns from one of his expeditions, and the swaggering obelisk is only too happy to regale them with his exciting exploits. Striking a dramatic pose and tossing his luxurious mane over his shoulders, Gulch could talk for hours, spurred ever on by the starry-eyed residents and their eager questions. Similar in nature to the pompous mage Medeis, if the two big personalities are in the same room they will vie relentlessly for the centre of attention, each trying to out-do the other with stories of their own cleverness and bravery, each tale becoming more ridiculous until eventually they realise they're the only two left in the room.

But Gulch doesn't spend a great deal of time in the lair, getting bored very quickly of 'mundane' clan life and wanting to maintain his rough and ready adventurer image (though he always takes the time to get his mane carefully coiffed before embarking on a new mission.) Lately Gulch has befriended a fellow archeologist; teaming up with Arlo to research the newly discovered Thunder Lizards digsite. This has proved a very lucrative contract so far and the adept obelisk has already brought many interesting things back to the lair, including some strange and undiscovered familiars. These weird and wonderful beasts caused quite a stir, which is something Garrison Gulch II enjoys doing almost as much as picking up his paycheck at the end of a quest!

Fun fact: Gulch may get some inspiration for his far-fetched stories from his hero, Indiana Janustrap.
