The Shade eats magic. Every dragon knows that.

What does the Shade do with the magic it eats, though? It takes it. It remembers it. Any given scrap of Shade becomes an amalgamation of every little bit of magic it has consumed over its existence.

The Shade is present within every magical creature on Sornieth. Not enough to harm them, of course. But enough that, over the creature's lifetime, that little scrap of Shade becomes a repository of their magic- a backup drive of sorts.

So what if you could isolate the Shade of, say, a dragon? What if you could keep that exact copy of them in case they died, and what if you could simply... return it to their body?

And that, dear reader, is Plan Zed.

The thing is, it is still the Shade. The Shade may be a repository- it may have its dragon's memories and magic and knowledge, but it is not the dragon. So, despite all efforts, the only thing that could be created from these Shade backups are mindless, feral zombies.

But hey! There's always a silver lining! Nexus did need some disposable front line units, after all...
