Biography
Beetle likes shiny things.
There weren't enough shiny things to collect in the ice and snow, so they decided to travel. They never really planned to get into gardening.
But while digging for shiny things they found a lot of strange plant-y things underground, and had to break through a lot of plant roots. They got to wondering what makes some roots thicker or stronger and some thin and spiderweb-frail, and decided to keep notes on the roots they saw. Eventually they started getting just as invested in their root handbook as they were in the shiny stones they dug up.
It turns out most dragons don't want to hear about roots and underground plant things. But these weird gardeners do! So Beetle decided to stay and share their notes.
They aren't too fussed about magic, though. They use a little for self-defense and that's it. Neon has tried to argue that magic is also shiny and pretty, and might be fun to learn about, but Beetle has remained unmoved. Magic is not the right kind of shiny.
