Biography

Ridgebacks hate water. They just do, it's in their nature, their very blood! Sandstone and dust are their lives, and water would be the thing to ruin it all. Nasty stuff; hence why one of the rare travelling ridgebacks outside of the Shifting Expanse used his ice magic at all. But who is this, and where did they travel to?

Salame is the name, and Gale Rain is the place. A floating island, with rain in the name- gods, why did he end up here anyways if it's so full of that hated stuff? The answer is the same way he deals with the water; his icy heritage. Salame has the ability to freeze water solid, and uses it with reckless abandon around his burrowed home to trap fish and make the ground solid. Being on the western side of the island, this means there's a swath of swampland that seems to be in a perpetual winter, slippery to walk on and terrible for the local fish. Shattering the ice and digging out the morsels is much easier than diving for them!

Plus, Salame loves the ice quite a bit. Not only is it useful and a way to get rid of water, it also helps coat and cushion the walls and ceilings of his burrow in order to keep his spines from being dulled on the rock. It's a point of pride that he's the sharpest ridgeback he's even known, even as that's not much of a bragging right considering his rarity among the island dwellers…

Even as a recluse, Salame isn't alone in Gale Rain. Matching his camouflage green tones, he lives with a beaver buddy named Chipper who helps him with his fish hunts. Buck teeth and dragon claws work at surprisingly similar speeds when food's on the line, and Chipper will dive into the liquid water for catches that Salame refuses to touch. In return, the little beaver gets a big scary protector! The set up is good for more than just survival, as even though the language barrier of their species, they've become the best of friends.

The other dragons in Gale Rain aren't strangers to Salame and Chipper, but the two of them usually prefer each other's company over that of the drakes dotted around the island. Their den is on the very edge of the swamp, which is good for keeping them out of the way of all the other's antics! Travelers landing on the outskirt of the island may find themselves sliding over what should have been soft moss and ground, slipping right by the ridge back's burrow and being welcomed to the island proper via faceplant into the border of the den, made of unfrozen muck and murky water.

How kind of him, to be so welcoming towards those visitors…
