Vera watched as Guinevere passed by in the distance. Her eyes lingered on the golden silks fluttering in the Queen's wake. Those silks must feel so nice... Vera shook her head to clear away the dangerous thought. A lowly thornling would never know such luxuries.

Vera walked away, letting her feet carry her towards a nearby pond. She scooped up some of the pale clay along the water's edge and smeared it over the left side of her face. Covering the right side of her face as best as she could, Vera peered into the still water. With her markings hidden she could almost pass as pretty. Quickly she dunked her head in the water and washed the clay off. She was fortunate enough to have been born with dark markings on her face and had seen the misfortune of those who were too fair for the Queen's liking. When the water settled she double checked her reflection was free of clay. Something glinted just beyond reach. Glancing around to make sure she was alone, Vera stepped into the pond and retrieved a small clear crystal. She held it up to the light, causing multicolored flecks to appear on her arm. It was almost as shiny as some of the Queen's jewelry. That thought caused her to drop the crystal. A lowly thornling should never know such luxuries.


Even after Vera returned to her sleeping quarters all she could think about was the crystal.
She wanted it.
Why should everything lovely only belong to the queen?
She needed it.
Vera snuck out at night and headed back to the pond. Shining in the moonlight where she'd dropped it was the crystal. As soon as she held it once more Vera knew she couldn't go back.


Vera left a note then fled into the night, not paying attention to the direction she was travelling. It didn't matter where she ended up as long as the Queen would never hear of her transgressions.
