He is said to live in the deepest part of the world: the Leviathan Trench. Light fades into inky darkness, this is a place where only alien creatures with glowing bodies and razor teeth lurk. The treacherous undertow is never ending, it is constantly churning up and burying ancient relics and artifacts at the bottom of the sea. Mysteries unknown to even the deities swirl in the currents. Those who reside here live in continual twilight as the last, weak rays of sunlight merge with the layer of silt and gloom. Here, the ancient, eldritch creature known as Leviathan lives. Legends say the monster gleaned too much knowledge from the Tidelord and was corrupted by the power of his wisdom.

Leviathan was found by the exalted dragons serving the Tidelord in the Trench, during an expedition. The egg was heavily battered, and it was a miracle that the intense pressure did not implode it. He cannot remember the name he had been given, or most of his childhood, but he has memories of reading ancient texts from the library and learning from scholars and historians. Leviathan always had a hunger for knowledge. Eventually, he was taken in as a apprentice to the water deity, to learn and serve under him. The more he was taught, the more questions he had. Leviathan soon found himself practicing dangerous, archaic spells, in effort to learn more of magic and Sorneith.

He doesn't know what happened next, it's as if his mind has blocked out the memories. In his nightmares, he sees himself uttering a dark curse. His mouth moves, but he only hears sirens screaming. Then, it was like he merged his mind with the very essence of the water domain. Pure, unfiltered magic coursed through his mind. His mind was expanded, he was omnipresent, foreseeing everything that ever will and could be, all at once. In that fragment of a moment, the young guardian was changed.

Leviathan wakes from the night terror, and he is surrounded in the comforting shadows of the Trench. He was born in the darkness, and will always return to the darkness.

ETYMOLOGY — The name לִוְיָתָן is a derivation from the root לוה lvh "to twine; to join", with an adjectival suffix ן-, with a literal meaning of "wreathed, twisted in folds".
