Personality

She is quite secretive about her work, but makes friends easily. She doesn't often choose to make new friends, however. Most of the dragons she knows are cherished acquaintances, but rarely more than that.
She is extremely loyal to her clan. She fights with all of her might and will whenever called upon to defend the lair and community.
When working, she prefers to be alone, though she wouldn't turn away a colleague when working on a large project.
When other dragons call her work into question, she defends her point of view with facts and evidence. When that isn't enough, she engages in diplomacy so that she may understand why those who oppose her feel this way and respond accordingly.

History & Character
Zois hatched without any parents to help guide her. Right after hatching, she wandered in search of food. Her first encounter was with an animal that was about to eat an insect. Sensing the tiny hatchling was hungry, it gave her the food instead and left to look for more. She never forgot the kindness of that animal, though she did forget what kind of animal it was. Ever since, she does not eat animals -- other than insects.

Zois is different from her contemporaries. She doesn't make fighting her main occupation, though she's one of the best defenders of her clan.
Her chief interests have always been in collecting pebbles and sea shells. She has traveled to every shore and mountain top -- often braving severe weather and attacking monsters -- looking for all types and colors of each.

Beyond simply collecting them, Zois uses specialized tools to examine the rocks and shells. She was asked by a clanmate why she does this. Her reply was scientifically complex, but boiled down to "environmentalism". Her fondest wish is to know everything there is to know about Sornieth's environment and put it to good use.

Her theory is that, by observing the land and sea and the effects of each on the other, she will know about trouble before it occurs and will be able to warn other scientists, so they may all decide what to do about it.

No dragon can get hold of her notes, nor will she let on what she's observed so far, other than, "All is well," -- at least until she's absolutely sure of its accuracy.

Her clanmates have chafed at her secretiveness, meaning they want to see inside her room/laboratory, but she won't let them. She even carries around her neck an ornate key made of cobalt, inlaid with platinum and silver, and enchanted by a close friend within an Arcane clan. The key may only be used by Zois, as was discovered by a cunning former clanmate who disappeared after turning it in the door.

Nevertheless, they've devised ruses to get a glimpse inside. Once, a burgeoning fellow scientist took her a plate of cookies and knocked on her door. After being offered the delicious dessert, she merely said, "Thank you, but you know I don't eat sweets."

When she saw the young scientist craning her neck slightly, she frowned and quickly closed the door.

The next time anyone knocked on her door, they noticed Zois had erected a barrier -- tastefully decorated in small seashells and polished gemstones -- so nobody could see inside, no matter how wide the door opened. No matter how secretive she was, however, all of her clanmates appreciated how quickly and efficiently she defended them from enemy attacks.

When Zois won prestigious geology association awards for several scientific papers she wrote, her clanmates suddenly swelled with pride at having such an accomplished scientist in their midst, chalked her behavior up to "eccentricity", and left plates of rare insects outside her door in tribute.

Trivia

Zois was born of Lightning, but was adopted by the Earth clan who found her wandering in a small canyon shortly after she hatched.
She has never desired sweet things. Her opinion on dessert: "It's not necessary and doesn't taste good at all."
She nearly won her bid to make the lair a meat-free zone. She withdrew her bid once someone else pointed out that insects are a kind of meat.
She smiles secretly, within her secret walls, on the odd evenings when she decides it's time to push her worktables out of the way and dance the night away!
