At the very end of the Riot of Rot, the green egg began to shake. Bramble had anticipated this, being more in tune with her honourary siblings, and she was waiting. Her plan was to raise the little orphan in the same manner she was once raised by Arrenzo, partly to ease her guilt over her mistreatment of Sholto.

When the little mirror finally tumbled out, however, Bramble was stunned. She had hoped for a little cutie, like Sholto had been, to show off to Arrenzo when he got back. Instead, she was left with a scrawny, sickly pink beast. She couldn't help it. The very first gasp the little mirror heard was 'Why?'.

Why instantly took to his new name, and to Bramble. He dotes on her every word, and listens to all of her teachings. Despite both his element and his breed, he is actually a very lively and likeable fellow, eager to get to know those around him. When he isn't playing around Bramble, he is trailing after Sholto, determined to make the older mirror like him. So far, his efforts have served to annoy rather than endear.

Since growing up, Why has been following Sholto into the between, despite the other's objections. He is quickly picking up the same internal energies, although he is still energetic and liked by the others. His main goal is to bring Sholto back round, and to get him away from the increasingly dark Yuna.
