No matter what she heard, she mustn't come out from under the desk. Even though everything hurt, her limbs ached from crouching for so long, and her high heels made her already sore and blistered feet scream every time she shifted to alleviate the pain of inactivity.
Outside her small room, monsters cried out in the darkness. Desks were smashed, the building burned. The itching in her mane could only be insects, nesting on her like she nested in the remnants of the office, hoping it would be enough to save them. Insects upon a cowering insect. She'd fallen straight into one of her worst dreams, and no matter what she did, she couldn't wake up. The twisting shadows at the corners of the room were forming themselves into the mockery of people, taunting her, parroting the voices of her parents. Telling her she chose the right path with their voice wrought in hollow praise. A figure stood in front of the desk and stared into her. She could only see its claws, and the tattered rags it wore, and the blood that occasionally dripped from it onto the floor in front of her, but she knew it could see her. It dragged a hunk of metal which might have been a weapon behind it, but it didn't need it to cut into her with its stare. She closed her eyes and prayed it would go away. None of it was real. None of it. And it was exactly what she deserved. She didn't know how long she stayed there, until the man who Was real entered the office. She didn't even know how he was real, only that it banished the figure who judged her endlessly. Lisa Garland shifted her aching limbs, scrabbling out from under the desk with a fervor she could not place. Despite the weapon he held, she threw herself at him, aching for the touch of something, someone, who would tell her it was okay. He froze at first, possibly thinking she was yet another of the creatures that lurked in every corner, but it didn't matter. She pressed her face to his chest and held on, and when he returned the embrace, she felt the tears gathering in her eyes finally dribble down her cheeks. "Please don't leave," She said, breathlessly, her mascara running like liquid rot. He didn't stay for long, he couldn't, but when they spoke, it was like dream had finally become lucid. |
