Biography
Skade of Oldtown
__ |
__ Hailed as the clan's venomously impatient vault-dweller, Skade is not often seen. Her duties allow her to linger in the background, easily missed, and this suits her just fine. No part of her was created to be the centre of attention. Her role is that of the opposition, the one that pokes and prods and finds the flaws. When she is asked to join the Councillors for meets, Skade is the pessimistic grouch in the corner challenging every idea and word. When dragons ask her for advice, the few that dare, they are given the most thorough feedback one could ever dream of. She is old and has seen much, a whole life filled with experiences most dragons will never have. This isn't something she appreciates being mentioned; she's spry as a freshly caught depin, you know, her age is irrelevant. At least that is what Skade will tell you, as if her bones doesn't ache when it rains and her grumblings aren't mostly focused on 'young 'uns' and 'kids these days'. It's of no importance! None at all, don't you dare say otherwise. | __ |

Time, as far as Skade is concerned, ought to not be wasted. She's got no time for nonsense or foolishness, thank you very much, and she'll gladly tell anyone she considers to be wasting hers this. More than one dragon has gotten dressed down for not getting to the point quickly enough during her years in Valhall. If someone is lazing about, Skade will be the one barking at them to get back to work. Productivity is a lifestyle. And while she does not mean to come off as cruel, she often does. Her words cut deeply and tact was never Skade's strong suit. She knows she has, and will probably continue, to hurt others' feelings with her prickly self. It is not what she wants, but it happens time and time again despite her best efforts, and Skade is resigned to owning up to the mistakes she will make and apologize for them thusly. Skade's love is not sweet nor soft, but full of sharp edges and pinpricks. She loves by pressing her closest ones to be better, to always be their best, and though they are spared the worst of her rudeness they are subject to her highest expectations. And therefore it is not easy to be loved by Skade, nor is it easy to love her, but those that do find the most fiercely loyal companion beneath the emotionally stunted sneering and grumbling. Because Skade will go to the ends of the land and beyond for those she loves, will be with them every step of the way, and there is no better dragon to have by one's side than Skade. Her endless loyalty and exceptional talents with finance, planning, and budgeting is why she was given her role as Vault Master. Skade is one of few that can be trusted to always safeguard the clan's best interested and finances, to be the one advising everyone on how to manage their personal economies and how to ensure there is always enough gold to support the whole of Valhall. It is her role; her pride, even, because her own trust and goodwill was repaid tenfold, something she did not dare believe was possible anymore. But they proved her wrong and it is one thing she's glad to have been wrong about. | __ |

The world was different when Skade was young. She'd been a Guardian, way back when, no markings upon her scales and lofty dreams rattling around in her skull. There had been so many things to do; endless land, unexplored, and endless new faces to encounter on the way. Her heart had still been light, unburdened, and no one had tried to rip the joy from her. Skade's parents were supportive enough, if distant, and she set out with only her brother by her side. They did not stay together long, Skade choosing to go one way whilst Betty went another, and she was left to wander the world on her own. She did not mind it. Her path took her to countless lairs and allowed her to meet countless dragons, hearing their stories and getting to take part in their lives. But Skade was naïve, then, and did not see the dangers. She did not see the cruelty of the living as something to worry about. There were tales of dragonkind and their wicked ways, yes, but it would not happen to her. The majority of dragons were of the good sort, Skade was sure of this, and she did not heed the warnings. What a foolish young dragon she was. Tragedy came in the form of a stranger posing as a friend. Skade did not suspect them to be up to no good, to plan to take everything she had and leave her for dead. But they did, and Skade was given her first lesson of the world; carved into her flesh as a wide scar that would never fade. She ducked her head to hide it, shameful, and felt the joy seep from her soul with every passing day. Skade kept wandering. She did not have a choice in the matter, not this time, and learned the ways of the world as she kept living. Much of this time in her life is shrouded in mystery still, long stretches of time she refuses to speak about, even less think about. And then her path led her to Valhall, still a little gathering of ramshackle huts full of tired dragons that worked themselves to the bone to keep things running. By then, Skade was hardened and tired. The edges of her jagged heart were sharper than ever, always ready to hurt, and there was a bitterness festering beneath her skin like a disease. She had no heading in life; no path to walk, no purpose, no dreams left that hadn't been turned to cinders. What her damaged heart needed was time. Years down the line, Skade's harshest edges have softened and rounded. She is no good at expressing herself or what she feels, but she allows herself to feel, and learned all over again how to be vulnerable. She met dragons that proved themselves worthy of her trust, dragons she could learn to love, and stopped guarding herself quite as fiercely. Oh, she still spits venom at those around her from time to time, but makes an effort to rein herself in. For them, she tries. There is the odd problem of her sometimes trying, and failing miserably, at explaining what goes on in her strange little head or what she's feeling, and she'll lash out like a feral cat without thinking. Skade stumbles. She does not know if she will ever be finished healing. She is a terrible choice for comedy night and philosophical discussion, but she tries even then, for them. For her loved ones, her precious clan, Skade will always do her best to spare them from her ugly side. It is always for them. But travellers are fair game. Those darn cretins cost more than they're worth to feed and she'll be sure to let them know as much. | __ |
