Biography
Nerites
|
From the moment Nerites hatches to the Sanitatem clan, she looks forwards to the future. Though, not in the typical optimistic sense. When gazing at the reflections in the opal that grows upon her body, Nerites experiences visions that leave her dizzy and in agony. But soon, these visions direct her to the gardens, wherein she gazes into the pools kept for watering the crops. Transfixed, Nerites sees things in the water that she would have never thought possible; dragons soaring higher than ever before, aided by technology that is alien and unfamiliar. Frightened and disoriented, Nerites wanders off one day, never to return.
Whether she ends up wandering towards the Forbidden Portal by coincidence or by the invisible machinations of fate, the half of the Polareis clan staying there welcomes her with open arms. Proclaiming her visions to be a gift, Hemlock offers to confer a blessing of clarity upon her. Desperate for anything that will make sense of her second sight, Nerites quickly agrees. At first, nothing seems to change. Her visions are still chaotic, beautiful and terrifying and alien. But as she talks to Hemlock and his advisor Faithkeeper, she learns to decipher them. They're an offer from the stars: a promise of new technology and magic that will take dragonkind farther than they've ever been before. Wide-eyed and grateful to have any narrative to follow, Nerites talks excitedly of what she sees to anyone who will listen. Most dragons in the clan will listen from time to time, but Faithkeeper is the only one who pays rapt attention to her every word, even going so far as to take notes. Viewing her as the sign he's been looking for and a missive from the celestial gods, Faithkeeper devotes himself to her entirely. His unwavering trust and interest in her is something she hasn't experienced before, and it doesn't take long for their relationship to take on a romantic tone. But the whirlwind of their love is over as quickly as it begins. Each a devout believer in something, they disagree on some vital details. Hemlock does his best to mediate, but his patience grows thin after some time. To Nerites, what hurts most is how quickly Faithkeeper moves on afterwards. |
