________________________________________________________________________ Somewhere in the dark, battle scarred forest, the Green Knight remains wandering. He won the war, yet lost the battles. He couldn't take the fame. Slowly, ever so slowly, he is becoming another. The colour of healing, the colour of envy, is now shifting to that of rage. I was once a normal soul, mundane and boring and known to few. Day after day, I worked and worked. Sleep, work, home, sleep. When war arrived I fled to fight, to escape the monotone, to defend those happy in the humdrum. The frontlines were fraught, were taut and long. We fought and fought, lost and won, and lost again. With every battle we stepped back, again and again and again. I may have been sane, I may have been crazy, I no longer know who I was then. We lost every battle, til the enemies were nigh. They advanced on our forces and crushed them to dust. I fled to the forest, no longer to fight. To survive was my instinct, to flee and take flight. For months there I stayed, my fear fading fast. I heard the cries, the pleas and the shouts. I could take it no longer, and took flight to fight. I won the war, and saved those in the everyday. I became the hero. I took pride for a while - they loved me, they saw me, they knew me for me - but the eyes bore into me and tunnelled to deep inside. Again I fled, to the forest again. No one would find me, I hoped, I prayed. My envy of the abnormal turned to the red of rage. I knew I was no longer me, I knew I was changed. But to who? To what? What had war done to me? In reflections I saw green; in them I saw red. Who was this being watching me from them? |
