The Rogue Doctor

My my, how very interesting...

A shooting star...

Sunscald keeps quite busy tending to the afflicted dragons. He himself is not without symptoms, mostly a minor suppression of his native element that has his Plague mutations more pronounced than usual. As such, he is working with Light and Lightning dragons, and leaving the Plague-prone Shadow dragons to the other healers.

What a way to be welcomed back!

*

Sunscald remains busy, but the clan has recovered enough for him to spend some time analyzing the aether. He has no real opinions about them, but if any join the clan, or any of the nearby clans, he will need to know how to doctor them.

*

Greenskeeper Gathering has come as a great relief. Sunscald has been poring over the anatomical notes that Terviskhar produced, determined to understand aether anatomy before Winewings becomes one and immediately breaks multiple legs.

Despite his scruffy, grimy appearance, Sunscald is a highly-skilled healer, having trained under Northslope Clan's doctor, Arquen, for several seasons. He has maintained a practice in the scrubby wastes of Lightning and the Plague/Shadow border. Healers not bound to a clan are few and far between, especially in those areas, and created a high demand for his services. As of now, he is debating moving to Fire along with the clan with which he is affiliated, or trying to keep his offices in one of his old locations without his longstanding patients.

Quite capable of fending for himself, Sunscald is fairly generous with payment, accepting gems, treasure, books, supplies such as herbs and gauze, and edible insects. Those who refuse to pay outright, however, may find themselves the subject of one of his experiments. Unbeknownst to most, Sunscald's restless fascination with Plague extends to creation as well as cure. He has cultured several unique strains of bacteria; some are beneficial, but others lead to hideous infections. He experiments broadly on beasts, travelers, bad-faith clients, and, occasionally, himself, and frequently takes visits to the seething mire of Quarantine Zone 128. His native element leaves him largely inured to this punishment, though he has scarred himself on several occasions.

Despite this, Sunscald seems to genuinely like his patients. In addition to his independent practice, he has a friendship and standing contract with a bandit queen and a wandering swordmaster. He also contracted with the Rogue's Camp, and showed a particular interest in Moonfire, whom he knew when he had a practice in the Expanse.

Physical description
Sunscald is a large, heavy spiral with a curiously intense presence. His shining scales might be beautiful if they were not covered in a constant film of dust and slime. Lines of trapped blood score his back, and his belly is covered in soft glands that weep slime if pressed. He flies poorly, despite a substantial wingspan, but is fast on the ground and extremely good at burrowing.

Combat
Sunscald is a top-tier warrior, using a combination of strength and vibrant vitality to outlast his opponents. Weak opponents may be dealt a slash of harsh ultraviolet light; others may be subjected to his experimental strains of bacteria. Most fights begin with him emerging from a bolt-hole in the sand and end as his victims succumb to bloodloss and fast-moving infections. He prefers to fight alongside Lyrrkril and Valarauko when possible, but will attack opportunistically even if alone.

Origin
Sunscald was brought into Cindercone Clan as a hatchling just before the Riot of Rot, largely for his pretty scales—at that point, a dusty silver, with deep green wings. He, in fact, fledged during the festival, and was immediately drafted into nursing other dragons. This early encounter with disease appears to have given him a permanent fascination with the element.

In the aftermath of the festival, Sunscald became caught up in a nasty cult, which went undiscovered until early in the Season of Rest. He was sent to Northslope Clan to recover, as they had members who had fallen prey as well and were already making a concerted effort, spearheaded by Arquen, to root it out. Sunscald spent the next several seasons as the Plague tundra's assistant, though the treatments intended to leach the cult's influence from him drained the color from him as well.

He was at last pronounced clear to return during the season of Wind. His home clan was less than happy to see him, however; he was dull-headed, foolish, and apathetic, serving more as a reminder of their failure than anything else and retained only for the sake of being one of the earliest dragons to join. During the trials, he was left behind, and at last something, perhaps in the mimic-bear he had been bonded with, made his long-standing empty-headedness fall away. After some searching he found a territory of his own and began building his tunnels.

Sunscald is presumed dead; few have mourned, and none have searched hard for him.

Kin
Sunscald's heritage is largely spiral, intercut with snappers and skydancers, particularly on his half-skydancer father's side. Pearlcatchers, plentifuls, and a few coatls dot his mother's side, but he has no imperial, ridgeback, or nocturne in him, and precious little mirror, coatl, or wildclaw. He knows little of them, but has looked up the rough outline of his heritage in the libraries of Light.

Sunscald has three children of his own by the shadowy skydancer spy Liglanaerr. All of them are faintly sinister, from Nevalainen, who hoards secrets and extorts those who hide them, to Wintersky, who spends most of her time away from the clan and doing something mysterious. Caverncold, the most normal of the clutch, transformed herself into a nocturne during the first Night of the Nocturne; she is also the only one to have propagated his line further than herself.

More recently, he has taken up with the similarly-rogue engineer Harvestmoon, and sired with her a series of Plague and Fire dragons with nearly-metallic hide and a precocious will to fight.

Familiar
The loga, Wastewater, dwells in a series of pools pocking the convergence of the Abiding Boneyard and the Wandering Contagion. Clearly artificial, they do not appear bothered by the bacteria-laden waters they inhabit, but send a constant series of updates back along the familiar-bond to the spiral. Most likely their purpose is to monitor water quality, but as Sunscald appropriated the creature from some ridgebacks, he remains uncertain.
