Biography
North of the Lightning Farms and the giant Tempest Spire obscuring the landscape, and just to the east of the Carrion Canyon, overlooking the death and decay in the deep valley below, there was a decrepit statue of a guardian. Green with plant life and falling apart, the hulking form could barely be called a guardian any longer, but there was the unmistakeable shape of fins carved out in the stone, and the statue appeared to be protecting something or someone--though just what it was guarding was lost to the ages, and nothing but cracked stone remained in its place. Most dragons didn't notice it--it was just part of the landscape--though it was a common site for hatchlings to play on and practice flight from.
The statue was meant to remain there, body turned towards the Carrion Canyon, until it turned to dust, but a young couple wandered out beyond the edges of their clan for privacy and laid a nest at the statue's feet. Something must have happened, a shift in the surrounding rift perhaps, because one morning the statue was gone, but a fifth egg appeared in the young couple's nest. The young couple never noticed, and other dragons never remembered there was once a statue there, but occasionally a hatchling will stare off into the distance where the statue once was and ask where it was, regardless of whether or not they ever played on it.
Cato doesn't remember being a statue--doesn't even consider it. As far as he knows he is just as much dragon as his four siblings. Except for the pull he feels towards the deep end of the Carrion Canyon, an area so dark despite it's proximity to the Sunbeam Ruins, he'd be completely normal. Cato says it's his charge down there, insists so, but the feeling hidden beneath his ribs is nothing but pure fear, and he won't go down into the Carrion Canyon even if the fate of Sornieth itself were on his shoulders.
Even as a hatchling and adolescent he was jokingly called an elder. He's nowhere near the right age for it, but his rigid need to follow the rules is overbearing and beyond too much. He says it's for everyone's safety, but behind his back his sister Pearl even says that he'd kill her without hesitation if he was following a rule, and it's never said as a joke. Allat's the only one who really sticks up for him on that side of things--she says she understands it, that sometimes someone just needs something to fall back on to feel okay.
