Annas is a reassuring presence for distressed hatchlings. He has trouble remembering all of their names - they grow up so fast! - but this softhearted Tundra can tell immediately which of them is in need of comforting (or sometimes a stern talking-to). His clanmates know they can rely on him to watch over their children, keep them herded together in outdoor play areas, sort out their squabbles, and most of all defend them from danger in a whirl of shaggy-furred fury.
This watchful dragon knew immediately when some of his charges began sneaking away to spy on the pretty white Bogsneak. He followed them from a careful distance, and escorted them back to the main lair with only a mild scolding when the chattering crowd emerged again. Since his clanmates allowed her to live nearby, he decided she was safe company for them, and did not try to prevent them from returning.
It became a normal expedition, two or three evenings every month. He walks them to her lair, keeping close watch on the forest around them. Then he waits respectfully outside, bewildered by the strange scents and smokes wafting past him. When the little ones scurry out again, they huddle close to Annas on the way back, frequently underfoot in their attempt to stay in the light of his floating lanterns. Back in the lair's creche it usually takes them a while to settle down to sleep. He walks around the chamber, lighting the dark corners to show there was nothing lurking there. He patiently hums to the youngest when they need to burrow into his fur for reassurance, and tells them how his familiar will keep the nightmares away.
Recently, Annas has been following them partway into the Bogsneak's lair to listen to her stories too. He stays very quiet, not crossing the threshold to her inner chamber, and she is tolerant of his presence in a way she would not be of pushier adults.
