If asked, Kurt only cares about Ameline and her family insofar as her uncle pays his wage. A cold, uncaring mercenary to his core, he'll say. Underneath that is a soft heart and a brotherly affection he struggles to hide. Tasked with protecting and training the three of them in self-defence from their early teen years, he's grown close to all of them in spite of Constantin's rebellious nature. From assassins and bandits and the monsters of the island, his blade stands to defend them. From poison and corruption and ambition, however, he is powerless. Failure weighs heavy on his heart even though there's no possible way Kurt could've protected them from themselves. What are a few more ghosts to haunt him anyway? At least one of them survived. At least he still has Ameline. At least she's properly embraced her little sister routine (the stuffy royal didn't agree with her and despite his initial caution about calling her a friend, it's worth it). He may live to wish she hadn't, however.
