“You must have patience, and faith that it will be rewarded,” her mother encouraged. Shael’s face, upturned to the sun, held nothing but serenity, peace and surety in every line.

“It helps to let go of your expectations, and simply leave yourself open to what the gods choose to reveal.” Her father Meyne’s eyes blinked open and closed lazily, reflecting the twinkling stars above, unseeing and yet knowing more than she could grasp.

Good advice, so it seemed - it clearly worked for each of them. Even so, she struggled. Hours of contemplation and prayer left her with nothing but restless hands and stiff muscles, bereft of the enlightenment that came so easily to her parents. She craved it - an end to her confusion, her lack of direction, a purpose that she could devote herself to.

She complained as much over tea with her grandfather one day, and he smiled with the same kind of easy serenity her parents had - in spite of his decided lack of religious devotion. “How do you do it?” she demanded. He took her into his workshop and described the process of his craft - the blending of alcohols and oils, balancing out the heady notes of each scent to create something greater than each part alone.

Even with the breeze from the window her head swirled with the fumes, his words rebounding, so close to that clarity she sought. Not quite the answer - but maybe there was an answer, a way to open her mind that wasn’t reliant on the same kind of prayer her parents practiced. She turned to studies of herbalism and brewing, experimenting with blends that sharpened the mind, clarified thoughts, and let the mundane fall away. Her tinctures and elixirs may be far from traditional, but in them she’s found a purpose at last.

♥ MEYNE (her father) Meyne is relieved that his daughter has found the direction in her life that she sought, but worries that her experiments - mostly on herself - could backfire one day. He does all he can to encourage her to seek out others in her craft and learn from them.

♥ SHAEL (her mother) Shael vacillates between pride and unease over her daughter’s craft - while she sees the value in aiding her followers to achieve enlightenment when their temperaments aren’t suited to long hours of meditation, she worries that the wrong mix of chemistry and magic could obscure the gods’ truth rather than reveal it.

♥ SADZHIK (her grandfather) While Elvelan’s potions aren’t strictly the same as Sadzhik’s perfumes, her grandfather is delighted at the chance to discuss the intricacies of the chemistry with her.
