Biography

“Cease calling me such crude names and I might reconsider giving your life another day. If you know me so well, you understand I don’t let easy food get away.”
She nodded; her expression could answer it anyway. “Of course.”
“What do you want from me? How do you know me anyway?”
“I’ve been watching you for a while. You interest me, back when we first met.”
“We’ve never met. I would remember a face that escaped me.”
She chuckled. “Yet, we have, back when I stumbled into your little atlantis. It looked so beautiful, yet so mysterious. I was entranced by such a place. . .but I had regained my senses before you found out I was in your home.”
Scylla’s fins twitched. She felt annoyed.
“I went to hide away, still staying close to watch. Then I saw it; a huge beast emerging from the lake inside the cave. It looked indigenous to the area; fins made for deepwater swimming, bones grown to skewer, a body built for the underground seas. It resembled an Earthen Sandsurge without question, but its form was. . .mutilated of such normal descriptions.”
“I was not mutilated. This is who I am; who I’m like. If you’ve come to insult me, I’ll have your head as my first bite.” She narrowed her sharp gaze, unblinking at the Skydancer.
“. . .I mean no offense. Let me get to the point. I was there on account of traveling to be curious and found this hidden hovel of a world embedded into the side of a huge mountain, close to the sea. I was interested in finding if anyone lived in it, and I found you inside. I studied you for a while, you know. I took notes; I observed your lifestyle; I found you intriguing; I found you strong.”
“You wish to use me,” she concluded. “You want to find what tool I could be. Watch your words; You’re extremely close to breathing your last.”
I wish not to offend you. I’m not looking to weild you like some sort of weapon, no no. In all honesty, it’s only her that can decide what to do with you.”
Scylla squinted, then quickly checked behind herself before turning back; the Skydancer was still there. “Who is ‘her’ you speak of?”
The small drake grinned. “Would you wish to meet her?”
“. . .not unless she comes to me.”
“I’m unable to bring her to you, unfortunately. Our clan lives far from this quiet beach-”
“Then why do you believe I would leave my own abode to visit wherever yours is?”
“I never did, only suggested it. I know you wouldn’t want to. . .not unless it had more food and safety for you. Meals are scarce for you nowadays, isn’t it? You don’t eat much, but there’s less for you anyway.”
“. . .How would you know that?”
“Is it true?” She rose a brow.
Scylla hesitated. “. . .Yes.”
“Like I said; I watched you, took many details of you. I made sure to remember this.”
“Just to convince me to follow you to some random drake you think would be interested in me?”
“Just to understand your predicament. You will go hungry in the next winter if you do not move from here. Those fish won’t last much longer for you, and you normally wish not to leave the cave anyway.”
“I have ways of keeping food. I do things to keep it plentiful.”
“I am aware. You’ve done it for years now.”
Scylla stood, untrusting her. “How long have you really been watching me? Why did you watch for so long?”
She smiled. “There are certain patterns people have, Sandsurge, and in order to find them, you must wait until they repeat. You are no exception; you have patterns, just like everyone else. You wait until months after mating season to eat more than normal, don’t you?”
“I’ve lost interest in you, Skydancer. Leave. Be glad I don’t wish to eat you anymore. You’ve soured my appetite.” She growled again; whatever tricks she was trying, it wasn’t working. Annoyed, she turned back to the sea, searching for the flopping specimens that were hopefully still on the edge of the beach. To her relief, they were, only they had ceased their movement; even better.
Walking towards them, she ignored whatever the Skydancer attempted to persuade with, until she said, “Wouldn’t you want assurance of food?”
