She was hatched without wings. There was nothing; no scar, no injury, just her lithe body minus wings. It didn’t bother her at first, but watching the other children learning to fly soon filled her with a deep longing, the kind of longing a barren dragoness feels when she sees a mother with her hatchlings. It was like a black hole, sucking away all emotions until the longing was all she had.

She set off, despite numerous warnings, to the mountains in the distance—the furthest landmark she could see from home. She figured that if nobody on the way there could help her learn to fly, with or without wings, then she would take matters into her own claws.

When she reached the mountain, she began to climb, not yet ready to give up on her quest. A seller of herbs and medicines spotted the wingless Imperial and invited her to his cave. He wasn’t a pushy salesman; he was a very caring soul who only wanted to help. The salesman brought out some empty chrysalis shells and enchanted one. He told her to eat it, and explained that she would make a chrysalis of her own and emerge three days afterward. He warned her not to attempt flight for at least an hour after she broke free.

She thanked him profusely and gave him all of the treasure in her satchel before leaving. She had been out of the cave for barely a minute when she bit down on the crunchy chrysalis and found a hidden alcove in the mountainside. A chrysalis was formed, and as the salesman had predicted, she emerged after three days, stretching and admiring her beautiful blue wings.

She was about to take off when she remembered the salesman’s warning. Briefly, she considered ignoring the warning, but she was worried that she might cripple herself after coming all this way.

So she waited.

In the beginning, she told herself that she’d wait two hours, just to be safe. However, as the first hour dragged by, her patience wore so thin that she was looking at the sun almost constantly to track its movement. When she was sure an hour had gone by, she took off.

The feeling of freedom was amazing! She loved the feeling of the wind through her fur, the feeling of weightlessness. The air even seemed to taste better.

But the moment couldn’t have lasted forever.

After a mere few seconds, she flew into a tree, still blinded from staring at the sun for so long. She crashed, hearing terrible snaps that could be either the tree’s branches or her own bones. She was broken.

The doctors said that she was lucky to be alive, but she would never fly again. She said that if she couldn’t fly again, she didn’t want to be alive.
