There was always something odd about Edith. One couldn’t quite pinpoint it, not exactly, but it was something in the way they moved. In the way they talked. In the way they weren’t quite a dragon.

Edith has never met their parents, or so they’ll claim to anyone who might ask. They don’t remember how they got to the Inn, they say. They just stumbled in one night, soaking wet and starving, and Starling took them in like he takes in any stray.

Edith has never met their grandmother, they say. They only know of her in whispers and rumors, in the sharp grin of the scientist who quietly offered them a place in his project, in the worried glances they get from the other “lost” dragons at the Inn. They know her in murmurs of an Organization, in the furtive glances that the mercenary who comes here every Friday with his adopted sons gives them, in the way they know they are not from Sornieth, not truly.

Edith doesn’t know their own past, they say. They don’t know why sometimes their scales crumble off like dust, or why their blood is not quite blood at all. They don’t know where they got the shining pocketwatch they keep on them at all times, but they know it’s special somehow.

Edith says they don’t remember anything before Sornieth.
