But she wouldn't accept his help, and his gifts lay where he left them. He tried to remind her of what they once had. She shook her head and left him, the sputtering candles dancing in the lonely night. The pines bowed their branches in her wake, burdened by the lanterns he had strung on them. The beautiful night and the moon high, the stars a witness to his shameful defeat. He cried out then, a wordless wringing of his heart. But he swallowed the rejection and moved on.

To forget his pain, he threw himself into work. He became competent, then excellent, and finally peerless, but still alone. For a dragon bent on companionship, it was devastating to watch everyone he cared for leave for better skies and friendlier wings. But he kept on, expecting to find the dragon who would stay.
