Riven joined the clan as an orphaned hatchling. Calmer than most spirals, he failed to keep up with his parents as they traveled close to the clan's territory. He was found coiled around a lightning rod by Silven, who was patrolling the clan's territory.

This encounter inspired him, and led to his desire to become a guard. Even as a hatchling, he convinced Silven to take him on the occasional patrol. Riven met Cynfaen for the first time on one of these patrols, and quickly became her designated escort to the safety of the dens, at Silven's insistence. They grew to be friends over the course of many reluctant flights home, with Cynfaen boasting about her discoveries (like small gems or hidden passages) and Riven recounting his fights (with small insects and birds).

Riven was the first dragon to notice something was wrong when Cynfaen didn't show up in a tunnel or a high place during lair patrols. He was uncharacteristically panicked while she was missing, and he was the first to find the rubble she was trapped under. He didn't leave her side until she had recovered enough to move around on her own.

Once he grew old enough, he took his place in the clan as a guard alongside Silven. He still found time to spend with Cynfaen, and as he did in the past, escorted her wherever she needed to go.

He worries a lot about Cynfaen, especially since the cave-in changed her a lot. He knows that what she needs is stability, but it's hard for him since he can't do much to help her. He especially misses the old days, when they would brag about their small accomplishments, and hopes that someday he'll see Cynfaen truly happy again.
