Kelsus never held a formal role in Clan Lukra, not until the advent of the little gods. Since he was one of the very first members of Clan Lukra -- the sixth dragon to ever join the clan, if Nesita's memory serves -- no one ever asked him to take on a job per se. Even as the clan became more organized, he remained content to unobtrusively hang out with Geras as she went through her duties, often perching on her head for hours at a time. In fact, Kelsus and Geras have been so inseparable since they were both hatchlings that Geras only recently realized that Kelsus was her Charge.

She ought to have realized earlier, really, when she found herself devastated by Kelsus' death by Zeal, the magical disease that once struck Clan Lukra. But then something miraculous happened, to save Geras from the pain of losing a Charge she hadn't even realized was her Charge: Kelsus came back. Or, rather, Frip brought him back, claiming that out of all the dragons killed, she had managed to save only Kelsus.

Kelsus doesn't remember his death, or the time he spent dead. But it did mark him forever, for when Barholme's Shade magic turned dragons into gods, Kelsus found himself the god of rebirth.

LITTLE GODS: REBIRTH
Not everybody gets to come back from the dead unharmed. His ability to do so, even just once, makes Kelsus a symbol of rebirth and renewal, able to restore and bring back an object or creature's previous state -- sometimes. It's an inexact art.
