Phantom is a quiet dragon, staring off into space when everything is silent, sometimes softly humming a tune. She never talks about it. And the others have learned not to ask. Phantom is a brilliant dragon, a true genius. Her self-care habits are, if possible, worse than Peregrine's. Peregrine forgets to sleep. Phantom actively avoids sleeping. The others learned why when after the first time they managed to get her to sleep, she woke them all up with a heartwrenching scream. Phantom avoids sleep because of the nightmares that come with it. She keeps herself awake with a toxic mix of coffee and energy drinks. Even Peregrine doesn't understand how she drinks the death juice. Not to mention the fact that the coffee she drinks is strong enough to give a normal person a heart attack. And then she mixes it with an energy drink. The others are amazed she's survived this long. Frequently she loses herself in her work, not responding to any external stimuli and forgetting to eat. The others have come to the conclusion that she's trying to forget. Their hypothesis was proven when Caide reported in an awed tone that she'd seen Phantom pouring the contents of a silver flask into the death juice. But the others don't know what she's trying to forget. Though they can see the constant pain that clouds her eyes, they will never know the true extent of her sorrow. Phantom is weighed down by guilt and heartbreak. The brilliant engineer may have been born in the Shifting Expanse, but she grew up on the streets of Windfall. She wasn't alone though. She doubts she would have survived if she was. She had Ethan. Neither of them knew of any family. But it didn't matter, because they had each other. Ethan was a young skydancer. He was an extremely gifted engineer. But his true passion was for music. And he was a brilliant magician too. His voice could always calm Phantom, no matter what was going on. As they got older, surviving off of pickpocketing and the meagre tips Ethan would earn for his singing, their relationship gradually started to change. They became more than friends. They fell in love. He sang for her now. They didn't have much, but they had each other. And they didn't need anything more to be happy. And then, during one of Fir's attacks, it happened. Ethan was hurt. Badly. Phantom wasn't strong enough to carry him to safety. He told her to go. She refused. He told her that he would always love her, and that while he may not be beside her, he would always be there. The song in the silence, and in her heart. There was an explosion nearby, and the shockwave threw Phantom away from his broken body. Her screams were lost among the cries of others. Dragged away by the flow of the crowd, away from Fir, and away from Ethan. She never saw him again. Never found him despite her desperate searches. Then the Lightning Sprite approached her. What choice did she have but to say yes? Now, among dragons she could easily call a family, Phantom no longer has to fear the cold and the hunger. But every time she closes her eyes, she's there, during the attack, being dragged away from Ethan. The guilt weighs heavily on her soul. She should have been able to do more. Should have refused to allow the crowd to drag her with them. Too traumatized to be on the front lines, Phantom manages coms, and engineers all their tech and equipment. She's a scarily good hacker. The others have discovered that it's best to keep their secrets on paper rather than on a computer of any sort. Phantom has almost as much blackmail material as Caide at this point. Phantom stays up late into the night, managing case files and building new gear, or upgrading the H.Q.'s security systems. Sometimes adding even more layers of encryption to her personal computer. Not that she needs to. At this point, it's unlikely that even the Stormcatcher himself could hack the thing. Add on: Ethan could be someone she knew before being buried and lost long ago. Like all those memories are things she holds dearly and remembers so vividly because it was all she knew before spending so long forgotten and abandoned. It could also be used as her motivation towards being so interested in computers and technology. She emerged in a world she didn't recognize and with technology far different from what was around during her times and decided to adapt to it (essentially like elderly people who know how to use the internet and aren't so resistant to change) |
