Biography
Rusalki Witnesses were the first to approach the reclusive Undertides with the message of the Plaguebringer. They were surprised when many immediately jumped at the chance. Once they became aware of the centuries-old grudge the Undertides held against their Maker, Rusalki flocked to the Undertide colonies in droves.
When the first Necromancer Undertide returned from her trials and asked to be made a Rusalka, the administrator made a shocking discovery: Undertides, being natural residents of the Deeps, already contained the symbiotic microbe in their bloodstream. Many Undertides underwent vast color changes and mutations naturally, without knowing why. When awakened by a Necromancer or Rusalka, they were able to control it within themselves and mutate at will. While they remained unable to transmit the microbe to another, they became passionate devotees of the Mother and hastened to do her bidding. With this knowledge, hundreds of Undertides were able to become Rusalki without having visited the Wyrmwound or undergoing the Trials.
Undertides, while not above joining a hunt occasionally, are primarily focused on the goal of persuasion. Few Undertides choose the path of Deephunter, and those who do rarely see their brethren. An Undertide Deephunter will usually partner with a non-Undertide Rusalka. Deephunters prioritize those mutations that will give them an advantage in the depths of the trench, or those that contain toxins.
Undertides have always prized colorful or flamboyant coloration like that of a tropical fish, particularly those native to the Sea of the Thousand Currents. Those Rusalki who take on the task of persuasion as a Witness or Oracle find that their cause is much helped by the fact that they can mutate to these patterns at will. (And most of them like to do it for fun--secretly.)
Many Undertides still choose to complete the Trials in order to prove their devotion to the Plaguebringer, and they bear with pride the scars on their bodies. Their coloration is not as brilliant as those who become Rusalki naturally; it is a trade they are more than willing to make in exchange for the ability to channel not only the Rusalka microbe but also any strain the Plaguemother grants them.
Eye types carry the same stigmas and associations as with the Rusalki and the Necromancers. Like the Rusalki, the Dark Sclera eye type is forbidden*, as it is the only way some can be distinguished from Lichs.
((*forbidden in lore, not in registration. You are more than welcome to have a fallen Rusalka!))
Undertide Rusalki, like their non-Rusalki counterparts, frequently have Maren as their familiars. These Maren were considered like family before, and retain that status after transformation, a far cry from the usual treatment of Necromantic familiars. Rusalki that choose to leave the Sea may select a new familiar that is capable of flight instead.
A note on Skins/Accents: Undertide Rusalki, like their modern brethren, are also prone to bizarre mutations. Any skin or accent that transforms them into a monster of the deep is welcome, as long as enough of the genes are showing to determine that they are in fact a Rusalka.
