The Serpent King —————————————
…… “Gather, Gather! Hear our tale, learn our legend! We live on!”
…… A brightly colored snapper in glittering golden armor ushers a crowd young and old into a dusty cavern. Stalactites hung from the opening like razor sharp fangs, a natural golden glow from within inspiring fear and intrigue. “Dragons of Sornieth, prepare to be amazed! Inspired! Tonight you will learn your worth,” he continued on. “Tonight, you will meet the Serpent King face to face! You will see the mighty warriors who so valiantly vanquished the beast! YOU will join the legend!”
…… The snapper gave a warm, mysterious smile to a group of five hatchlings. They had been lurking by the entrance for some time, listening to the hushed murmurs of the crowd. “I’ve heard that the Serpent King destroyed my home,” whispered one fragile skydancer in passing. “I was told that this beast is the reason our clan even exists,” boasts a proud guardian. “We would never have united without the need to stave off a common enemy!” With each new line, the hatchlings grew evermore concerned. One young dragon, a pale wildclaw, wilted beneath the Ringmaster’s gaze. Never one to enjoy the attention, she ducked behind an earth-toned coatl’s wing, desperately trying to pull it towards her. But the coatl was already gone.
…… With wonder and adventure in his eyes, the coatl had stepped forward. He strode past the Ringmaster with forced confidence, right into the mouth of the cave. Panicked whispers from his friends were shoved aside as the snapper called, “Last call! Not for a thousand more years will the King rear his hood again! Come, witness this enchanting enigma rise once more! Who knows; our. Ancestors might even choose YOU to bring forth our destiny!” He cast a glance directly at the hatchlings. Lowering his voice to a deep rumble, he stated, “Audience participation will be a part of the show.”
“Shenkai,” gasped the wildclaw quietly. A nocturne piped up, hissing,”I don’t trust that guy. This show is nuts! Who would be fool enough to bring back one of, like, the biggest villains in the history of the world?”
“But Mar, Shenkai is in there! It’s not safe for him to go alone!”
“It was his choice to wander in there, and I’m not about to pay for his mistakes,” huffed Mar. The Ringmaster raised an eye ridge.
“We have to pull him out at least,” pleaded the wildclaw. “Maybe he hasn’t found a seat yet?” The other two gave vague nods of accord as Mar growled. A vibrantly patterned spiral grabbed her friend’s wrist and slinked forward, with the wildclaw following close behind. The three friends scampered past the snapper as quickly as they could, avoiding eye contact. Mar rushed to catch up, grumbling and pausing before the Ringmaster. “This is foolhardy,” he called down the mouth of the cave, then turning to the grinning giant. He drew a deep breath and lowered his voice, panting and growling out a warning of, “I’m watching you.”
“Of course, of course! What is a show if not something to watch?” The snapper gave a well-rehearsed sinister smile. Mar was flabbergasted, quickly rushing out a, “That’s not what I mean and you know it,” but his target never heard. All that remained was a cloud of golden glitter, shimmering and hissing like a thousand snakes. The nocturne sighed and entered at last, running as fast as he could to catch up.
…… The mouth of the cave slammed shut.
