Biography
Periergeia
Sociologist Clan Elder Transmutation Mage Welcome Committee |
Once, years ago, a Tundra named Naphtolos went looking for pretty stones in the cliffs of the Lightweaver. He found a Fae in a tree and said "You smell like friends." She said she wasn't sure they'd met. He said "No, but you smell like friends anyway. I take a nap here under your tree, it is hot, I am tired." "Can't you return to your lair? Who are you?" "Not have lair. Not have clan. Just wandering, just thinking. I Naphtolos." An orphan this cheerful deserved the Fae's respect. She couldn't bear to argue with him; something about him was so genuine and affable she thought turning him away would be particularly cruel. The next day other dragons arrived, and then more, and then still more - never more than a few at a time, some looking to stay but many looking to pass on through. Naphtolos welcomed them all with excitement and genuine hospitality, and the Fae wondered why. "You off in distance," He told her one day. "You bright and small like stars." Naphtolos read from a book. "Centauri. Star of ...Centaur ...beastclans. Close by, but can never touch it. Like you." He grinned at her; it was a compliment, and he knew she would take as such. So she called herself Centauri, and years later when he made her into the clever skittish abomination she always knew herself to be, she repaid him by giving him the sharpest mind she could fathom, and gifting him with a library full of books for him to devour at his leisure. Upon his transformation into a Pearlcatcher, Centauri renamed him Periergeia, the Greek for Curiosity, because he never lost his taste for the stories told by the dragons all around him. |
