C loaked in night, a beast stalks the dunes. Terrible sound haunt the night, and the people are abuzz with rumors of the fiendish creature. They say to see her sighted eye is to see your doom. They say to see her blind eye is to see yourself. They say her voice makes your ears bleed. This is the tale of the Barghest, Morag. |

Born in a cave at Vestrahorn mountain, she was left to freeze. But then a shrieking maiden and her cursed mate found her. Both gazed down on the child, and the maiden bid her mate to pluck the spirit out of the child, so she may carry it. Her mate, wishing to see her happy, did so. They hid behind glamours, and went to spend the pregnancy in the nearby town of Höfn. For months she sang with the voice of death to the little one. She wished dearly the shrieking notes would gather in its lungs, so her solo might become a duet. Happiness filled her for the first time in a century. The child was born some few moons later, pale fur against black, four gnarled horns upon its brow. She tried to teach the child to sing as she did, but all that came from its toothed maw was a deep howl. Dismayed, she tried to teach her to dance, as graceful as the freezing winds, but all the child managed was the mad thrashing of a ferocious beast, or the quiet tread of a hunter. Once more she was dismayed. She turned to her mate, and accused him of putting his curse on the child. He did not deny this. He spoke at length about how his line must go forth, the importance of his power, the honor in this suffering. She was unimpressed, and flew into a shrieking rage, her voice freezing all the inhabitants of the poor town, and turned her claws on her daughter. Then her mate stepped in once more, bidding her to not kill the child. She snarled that she wanted a child all her own, and so long as this one was within her memory, she would never bear him another. He knew he would have a better chance of getting a proper line later after sating her, so he gave her what she wanted. In return for all her memories of the child, he would banish this child of the frozen tundras to a place of boiling sand and fire. His mate agreed, and so it was. He took the battered child in his paws, and with a heave of magic, it was gone. She woke on her side, the burning sand stinging her wounds. She only knew two things. Her name was Morag. She could never go home.

- She always feels cold to the touch, even in the heat of summer days. Unfortunately she will never feel anything but the boiling heat that first woke her.
