The Basilisk Dendrolepis
Basilisks are an interesting example of convergent evolution. Not truly related to the Spiral based subspecies they are nevertheless extremely similar, sharing colouring, patterns, poisons and territory. Basilisks are easily identifiable as an imperial offshoot, with stunted, claw bearing wings and shorter legs.
Basilisks though, unlike conventional imperials all share the same lengthy lifespan, possibly due to their slow metabolism. As a result Basilisks spend much of their time sleeping or resting, waiting for prey to come to them rather than actively hunting or foraging. Basilisk’s preferred diet is meat based, so most larger animals are on the menu, including beastclan. Large Basilisk have even been seen successfully preying on wartoads, yeti, mantarune, goldenbeasts and even the odd juvenile roc. This long lifespan means Basilisks also have the time to grow to truly enormous size. Labyrinth folklore even describes some well in excess of 40 metres long, haunting the darkest recesses of the Shrieking Wilds. Unlike their canopy based ‘cousin’ Basilisk do not have a poisonous bite. Instead they spit an acidic fluid into the face of their prey, blinding them. The quantity and range of this acidic spit only grows as they age. Truly ancient and isolated Basilisk are a real danger to any non imperial dragon, animalistic enough to see even guardians or ridgebacks as possible prey. Like Imperials, Basilisk are not social creatures. They will fiercely defend their territory from any other Basilisk or wandering Imperial, though never to the death unless the territory owner is a nesting female. Basilisk prefer to live in less storied territory, caves and dense undergrowth suiting their needs. As such, Basilisk are more common in Light, Shadow, Nature, Water, Arcane and Lightning. Earth based Basilisk are not so common, often subject to Beastclan attacks due to their solitary and highly predatory nature. Wind territory is too fragmented and multilayered for Basilisk to live comfortably, while more surprisingly Basilisk fare well in the evergreen forests of Ice. Basilisk find it difficult living in more populated territories, coming into regular conflict with those around them. This is especially so in the Shadowlands, where ancient Basilisk are (thankfully) rare and young Basilisk are in constant competition for territory with dragon clans. Recently, young Dendrolepis of both types have been emerging from forest and cave to establish loose social connections with standard dragon clans. Dendrolepis are also cropping up in nests of otherwise normal dragon pairs, leaving dragon geneticists to speculate just how old this subspecies is. |
